March 12th, 2002 Naturally, a person determines existence based on his own existence. People have been trapped inside themselves their entire lives, they are living in their bubbles of reality and are therefore limited to their own thoughts and being. If something exists for a particular person (i.e. an emotion, feeling, philosophy) then there should be no question as to the actual existence of this thing. However, what is existence? Existence cannot be limited to a scale as small as an individual-that is simply ignorant. Existence has to deal with mankind as a whole. Society at large. Everyone. Existence is defined as something that is real, something that is concrete that everyone can somehow grasp. A thought or private emotion does not really exist. It might exist to an individual, but that is not true existence. In order to make something real, to bring something truly into reality, it must somehow be validated. An action must be done. It is actions which determine the true existence of things. I can think about this as much as a want, but until the letters appear on the paper, they are not real. They might be vivid and alive in my head, but that is not existence. It takes the solitary action of writing a word- even speaking a word, which brings it to reality. We see that this holds true in a religious sense as well. In Judaism, it is understood that man has the capability of being jealous. It's a motion that is almost impossible to avoid. However, it is only a sin to act on jealousy. Homosexuality is only a sin if it's acted upon. God realized this. He understood that feelings are very real and very influential to an individual. But that doesn't really count. It's what you do with it. It's how you translate the feeling into an action which makes it real. Jealousy is wrong. But when it's in someone's mind, God is saying that it's not true jealousy. Acting on jealous emotions is what causes a person to sin. This is why I must write. I have said this before, and I still hold strong to it. No one may ever read this. But that doesn't matter. I am writing these words, and therefore I am bringing my thoughts from the confines and trappings of my mind into the world. Actions are what give birth to feelings, which grow into reality. This is my insurance; this is my responsibility- that the thoughts in my head will exist. I owe it to myself. Everyone owes it to themselves to bring what is important to them into the world. |
