Dan from the Herd of Turtles and I drove our rigs to Hope, BC for the 4x4 races which were part of the annual Brigade Days celebration. The 2000 races happened to fall on the same weekend as the BC 4x4 Association AGM, hosted by the Herd of Turtles, but we decided to go racing anyway. We were confident that we'd have a good time, despite the drizzle. Of course, any thoughts we had of winning any of the events were pretty much wiped clean upon arrival to the pit area, where we saw that most of our competition were trailered-in super-modified trucks and buggies, accompanied by big scary redneck types who looked like they might just enjoy twisting our heads off as a pre-event warmup. But, since  we had driven all that way, we decided to race anyway, and joined the race Marshalls and the other drivers/navigators in the course walkthrough.
There were quite a few entrants, with trucks ranging from a stock Ford Ranger pickup, many full-size pickups and SUVs, through nitrous-powered super mod Scouts and early Broncos.
The course was a closed run through bogs, up and down hills, around trees, and over logs and rocks. It wasn't a long course, but it was tricky and well-planned. It also paid to have a navigator along with you on your run, because it was a real challenge  driving AND keeping to the correct path. Most of the trucks finished in under two minutes or so. There were two modified big-money rigs, one a Scout and another a first-generation Bronco, and neither of them finished, due to broken drivetrains. Seems a matching truck and firesuit isn't all you need to be a contender :)
Dan's mom and girlfriend met us in Hope, and it's a good thing they did, because the got to see Dan's Cherokee place 2nd in the Stock Category. So his recent body-lift and weight reduction paid off!
