Biography
In 1989, John Knowles debuted a new wrestling organization that he deemed International Championship Wrestling (ICW). But it wasn’t until the company when bust in 1990 that John Knowles made his fame. Yes sounds weird but it’s true, John Knowles took Sky Sports to court because they didn’t pay the ICW for television rights. Knowles sued and won a hefty sum of £10 million. John Knowles the decided to retire in 1991 because of all the money he had made from the lawsuit. But he thought that retirement was for old people, as John was looking for something to do he was then offered a job by one John Barnes. Barnes was a local wrestling owner and he offered a job to Knowles to help him go global. Knowles accepted the offer and helped the company rise to fame. Knowles left the Extreme Wrestling Alliance (EWA) in 1995 and then the company was closed in 1997. Matty Monks offered Knowles a job late in 1999, Knowles accepted and he then joined the Total Hardcore Wrestling (THW). While it was getting started up, he was paid to scout for talent and he did so. In 2000 just before the first show in THW John had found talent in a 20 year old. John had discovered Chris Cherry, in what he said was a hot prospect for the future. Knowles told Monks about Cherry and one week later Cherry was in the THW. Cherry caused quite a stir in THW and then he shocked the world by becoming the first ‘EVER’ THW World Champion and that was in his first professional match. John Knowles was then deemed one of the best talent scouts in the world because of his find in Cherry. John Knowles then found more talent such as the ‘late’ Triple K (Killer King Kenny). Triple K was soon becoming a thorn in the side of Knowles when he kept on getting involved in the wrong side of the law. Triple K then apologised for his actions and was given another chance. Triple K then when on to win 7 world titles and also has a few run-ins with Chris Cherry. THW closed in 2001 and John Knowles then decided to re-open ICW and had a fantastic roster with the likes of Chris Cherry, Mad Mull, Scott Parker, Bodmaster, Razor Shark, Synskin, Charlotte Hardy, Faith, K.C. Beard, Backlash, Ideal, Phonic and Triple K. ICW was then close because of low ratings in 2003 and Knowles then finally retired, or did he? In 2004 Ultimate Wrestling Alliance (UWA) was born and it was struggling late in the year Knowles saw this and bought the company and brought it up to scratch by hiring Chris Cherry, Inferno and Kirsta (The Hellcat) to name a few. But still the ratings were very low. John Knowles was then told that a wrestling federation was looking for funds and another owner. The federation that was in question was the Mid South Wrestling Alliance (MSWA). Knowles watched this federation for a little while and was very impressed with it. He then offered a take over bid but only ended up with just fewer than 50% of it. Now in 2005 the MSWA and UWA has now merged into a single federation, the AWA! |
