Genetically Engineered Food: Is it a good or bad idea?
A Webquest for Chapter 4
As we have discussed in class, the issue of genetically engineered ingredients in the food that we eat is a controversial one.  Many of the grains that we eat every day have been genetically modified for some reason, usually to help it survive when treated with herbicides.  Your assignment is to use the two web sites below to answer the questions that are listed on the sheet that was provided to you in class.  One of the sites below is in favor of utilizing genetically modified ingredients in foods, while the other one presents the opposing view.  You will be looking at how each perspective defines genetic engineering, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of using this emerging technology.  Note: genetic engineering (GE), genetically modified (GM), genetically modified organism (GMO), biotech, and biotechnology are all terms that refer to the manipulation of genes in an organism to produce desired traits or remove undesirable traits.
