Silent Night

Joseph Mohr 1792-1848Franz Grüber 1787-1863

Austria: This hymn was written in 1818 for a Christmas Eve service in a tiny church high in the Austrian Alps. The chruch's organ was broke so Father Mohr wrote these lyrics that organist Grüber created the simple melody for. The organ repairman, who came after Christmas, saw a copy of this song while he was repairing the organ and passed the song to a touring singing group. Mohr and Grüber never knew how popular their song became. To hear the music for this hymn click on the button. Choose Traditional #11. Then click on this page.

Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night,
Shepherds quake at the sight,
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heavely hosts sing alleluia;
Christ the Saviour, is born!
Christ the Saviour, is born!

Silent night, holy night,
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.

Silent night, holy night,
Wondrous Star, lend thy light;
With the angels let us sing,
Alleluia to our King;
Christ the Saviour is born,
Christ the Saviour is born.
