Part
5
Sunnydale, 8:00pm
Buffy was sitting in the movie theater, sandwiched between Willow and Riley. They were watching "Notting Hill." She sighed. *Boring. What does this have to do with my life anyway, besides make me feel about a billion times worse?* She thought sullenly. *Real life just doesn’t work that way. Julia Roberts thinks being an actress is tough? She should try being a Slayer.*
Riley leaned over towards her. "Do you want some popcorn?" He asked.
She shook her head. "I’m okay."
"Are you sure? I’m going to go to the snack bar anyway," he told her while flashing a brilliant smile.
"Well…okay," she relented.
He got up and left the theater. Willow leaned over and whispered, "Isn’t he so sweet?"
Buffy shrugged. "I guess." It wasn’t that he was horrible, actually, he was really sweet and very cute, with blond hair, blue eyes, and a broad chest. *Sort of like Angel’s,* she thought, then stopped herself. Willow was right. Angel left; she had to stop thinking about him. Riley was smart and athletic, one of those "perfect boyfriends" that she had wanted when she had been a high school freshman, before she had met Angel. But that was then, this was now, and she didn’t want to move on. She couldn’t move on, yet. "He’s nice," she said quietly.
Willow smiled happily. "I knew you’d like him," she chirped.

LA, same time
"Angel, this is Kate," Cordelia said curtly. "I’ve got to go now, you know the drill." And with that she sped off.
Kate stood up and shook Angel’s hand. She had blond, shoulder-length hair and a slightly squared face. She smiled at him. "I’m Kate!" She said with a happy shrug.
Angel returned her smile with a thin one. "I got that," he said tightly.
"Of course," she said. "In any case, I’m a detective and I’m interested in working with your agency."
"Why?"
"Cordelia and I used to be friends, growing up, so when we ran into each other in Last week and I told her I was a detective, well, here I am."
Angel looked at her closely. *She seems all right,* he thought. *Ditsy, but all right. She’s not as pretty as Buffy though.* He almost smacked himself. *I left her. I’ll be damned…well, I’m already damned, but…*
Kate interrupted his train of thought. "Angel?"
"Huh? Oh sorry, you were saying?"
"I was asking if I would be able to work with your agency," Kate said with a smile.
"All right," Angel agreed. "You’ll get paid on commission. If you bring in business, you get paid. If you don’t, you don’t."
"Okay," she agreed, nodding her head. "See you tomorrow, Angel."
"Yeah, tomorrow," he said as she left.
