Fictional Story:
Friends For Keeps
"People come and people go. But there will always be friends who’ll stay with you no matter what. Friends who’ll stick with you in times of success and failures, ups and downs, happiness and pains, laughter and tears, for better or for worse."
Friendship and memories… 2 essentials of life.
Scott, a senior student, met Reese in a jeepney going to Manila. He was then busy reviewing his notes when the girl seating beside him caught his attention. Reluctantly, he asked the girl why she seems disquieted. And reluctantly, too, the girl answered back and said that she just lost her cash.
Without second thoughts, he offered to pay for her fare. And that started it all--- a blooming and a wonderful friendship.
From then on, they shared wonderful memories together: the times they hang-around on their fave hang-out, the loss of their first love, the times they ran after their crushes, lunch together, gimmicks, tears and quarrel blues. Those were the times they shared each other’s felicity and wretchedness. She is his soul mate, his confidante, his strength, his inspiration, his… sister. Everything… was purely innocent.
Coming from a broken family, Scott is all that she has. Reese’s life has been more exciting ever since he came. Suddenly, she finds herself doing things she wouldn’t have tried on her own. She’s now doing great in school. She can turn to him whenever she needs someone to talk to or even when she just needs to be listened to. He brings out just the right touch of warmth and laughter in her life. Their friendship went on through times of joy and times of sadness, and through all of life’s changing seasons, they have weathered all the storms. And they vowed to stay…FRIENDS FOREVER. She even wrote to her diary, once saying like:
Wednesday night, 11:40 p.m. feel happy and sleepy
Dear Diary,
Hi!I had a blast today. We checked out the coasts in Subic. Oh, I think I love him…,yeah, as a friend, as a guide, as a mentor, a shoulder to cry on and… that’s that. Nothing could ever change that. Everything is purely simple… and innocent I love him as a brother?Hmm… Time won’t tell, but, hey, someday, maybe everything will change…
(*embarrased!*) We’ll never know…we’ll see… Was he thinking about me? What does he think of me?What do you think? Maybe, it’s the same as mine… yeah as a…sister?! (Was that right?) Oh, well, I’m tired, good night!!!
Love, Reese
***
Two days before Reese’s 16th birthday, Scott received a phone call from Reese’s separated parents. She was in a hospital bed almost half dead. She was hit by a ten-wheeler truck and was helplessly left in the street. Tears rolled down his cheeks as he watch his once lively friend, now lying motionless.
"Reese… Reese…" Scott murmured between sobs which he was not able to control. Vivid thoughts of Reese played over and over in his mind. The sweetness of her voice, the frown in her face, the dimple on her cheek, their escapades in the mall, out of town tourings, the petty quarrels they had, their first meeting. Tomorrow is her birthday. It was supposed to be. Scott prepared a surprise party for her. He invited all of their friends and personally baked Reese’s favorite chocolate cake. But now, Reese would not see and taste any of it. She would not hear them sing. She would no longer live.
***
It’s Reese’s birthday. Everybody was present, the chocolate cake was served, gifts were arranged in a nearby table, a birthday greeting banner was hanged on the wall, but there is still complete emptiness. Where’s Reese? Reese isn’t there. She’s dead.
***
Scott was shattered. He lost his only possession, his most trusted friend, his companion, his everything. He would have wished to lie beside her instead. He was left with nothing. Nothing but the memories of a lasting friendship. A friendship that even death cannot break.
Reese’s mom interrupted his thoughts. She left him with something to keep. Reese’s diary. He opened it to the last page she had dated, Wednesday night. The last time they hang out together. He read its contents and for the last time, he learned to kiss his friend and whispered. "Happy Birthday, my friend. Farewell, Reese. Goodbye. You don’t know how much I miss you and… I love you, so much."
***
Hello, are you touched?
Eventually, friends will lead separate lives. The pain has to be there because it’s the antidote to that addictive emotion called happiness. And this is manifested as people ‘grow’ and time changes. We are human beings. Born to socialize. Born to have friends.
Some people really make a lasting impression in our hearts and we treasure them as we value our own life. They could be those unique individuals who on their own little and honest ways have rendered us an affection worth remembering.
No matter what happens next, you might have gone separate ways but the friendship you have nurtured will always be there. You may not say it often, you may not do it right sometimes, you may be wronged by people once, but the bond will always be there. You’ll always remain friends forever.
