| The Movie of the Week: The 25th Hour Director: Spike Lee Starring: Edward Norton, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Barry Pepper, Brian Cox, Rosario Dawson Explosive, Wont Let You go Until the Very End From acclaimed director Spike Lee comes a film about ridding the demons of the past and making up for lost times they caused. The story takes place in post 9/11 New York with the protagonist living his last day of freedom for seven years. Monty Brogden (Norton) was on top of his game as a drug dealer. That is until he gets busted by the DEA. As Monty lives his last day of freedom he tries to rekindle the relationship with his father (Cox) that he never had and tries to have one last good night? with his friends Slaughtery (Pepper) and Jacob (Hoffman) before going to jail. Also a thought that lingers in Montys mind while he is still free is who tipped off the DEA. A man Monty knows believes it is Naturelle (Dawson), his father does not believe it was her and Monty keeps doubting her, leaving the question Did she do it? Without fear Lee as a director decided to show shots with things from post 9/11 New York. For instance in one scene Slaughtery and Jacob are talking at a window overlooking Ground Zero. In Montys fathers bar there is a firefighter memorial wall. Lee says ?That as a filmmaker and an artist it would irresponsible to not have these characters being affected by 9/11. That they cant be walking through New York and act like nothing happened there. Lee who is known for his controversial movies directs this film with more of a sense or realism. The fact that the character is so real and has skeletons in his closet for say, makes it as believable as possible. It is an enjoyable film and is another one to add to Lee?s list of great films with the impact on American Film and culture. |
