Commentary (in regards to the top 100)
2001 was truly a great year in music! The last time we've had such a great year was 1998, where the following songs were among the biggest hits in radio: "Truly Madly Deeply", "Together Again", "Surrounded", "Foolish Games", "Time of your Life", "All My Life", "Frozen", "My Heart Will Go On", "I don't Want To Wait" "Uninvited", "The Boy is Mine", "Iris", "You're Still The One", Ray of Light" and "Thank-U".
The top 5 songs were really close. For example, only ten points seperated the #1 and #2 songs. If "Follow Me" would have spent one more week in the chart at number 30 or higher, it would have been the number 1 song of the year. That just goes to show you how tight it is. "Case of the Ex" definately deserves the #1 spot, though. Not only was the song carried over from 2000, but it debuted in the summer of last year, then re-entered the chart late 2000. So, it's actually a 2000 song that went on to perform much better in 2001.
There are no really big surprises on the top 100. Some songs that I expected to do well, ended up ranking under the top 100. Here are some examples.
Colplay, Yellow (#111)
Nelly, Ride With Me (#115)
David Usher, Alone in the Universe (#128)
2Gether, The Hardest Part (#140)
Bran Van 3000, Astounded (#145)
Sarah Harmer, Don't Get Your Back Up (#197)
Shaggy, Freaky Girl (#202)
The year 2001 will be remembered for great hits like "Like a Bird", "Hanging by a Moment", "Drops of Jupiter", "Follow Me", "Thank-You"m "Again", "All For You", "Someone To Call My Lover", It's Been a While", "All or Nothing", "When it's Over" and much more.
