Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah: When Time Travel Stories Attack
I am one of those people who can watch a movie with absolutely no scientific plausibility and still be entertained. I believe it is that reason that helps me to still be a Godzilla fan. My first movie was a Godzilla film (Godzilla vs. Megalon to be precise) and they have always had a certain place in my heart when it comes to entertainment. There is, however, one moment in the series that makes me want to strangle the writers over at Toho Studios. That would be the film Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah.
It goes like this: A craft carrying a crew of American dignitaries and one Japanese woman lands in Japan. They say that they are from a future where Godzilla's radiation has left the country decimated and lifeless. Their plan is to go back in time to when Godzilla was born and move him away from the nuclear blast that gave him his power. They do this, but leave three small genetically engineered creatures in his place. These creatures become King Ghidorah, who the American guys plan on using to destroy Japan who actually more or less took over the world in the future.
This is all fine and dandy except for one fatal flaw. First off, everyone has FULL MEMORY of Godzilla and none of Ghidorah, even though one replaced the other in the flow of time. The change in time would have erased this memory from the minds of the people. The fact that Ghidorah just appears out of nowhere is also up for review. The writers must have been high or watching a La Blue Girl marathon when writing this. Even lesser time travel plots get the change part right.
So in the end Godzilla is reborn somehow, he kills Ghidorah and the evil Americans (I'm saving this for a later article), destroys Tokyo (again ::budum ding::), and gets driven off to the ocean. On top of this very flawed time travel story, the acting by American actors during the trip back to a WW2 Pacific island leaves you with a case of dry heaves. Oh, and the timeship effects blow ass. Of Tri-Star's new Godzilla releases, this one tanks worse than the Japanese during a monster raid.
