STATE OF THE CACTUS ADDRESS III
It's been a long time.
First and foremost let me say this: Nerdcore is still alive. Sure, things aren't what they once were. That doesn't mean things can't change. Remember, we -won- the garbage can wars of 2001! We controlled an entire college campus for half a decade! For a brief time we were a true multimedia power! We became a force to be reckoned with all across the country! We could have changed the world, and we sure as hell changed this area and the people in it.
The word 'Nerdcore' is the stuff of legend at NCC. The school newspaper published a story on us not long ago, after it had been -years- since the last founder left. The group is still there, if a bit smaller and thinly organized. We all knew this little organization of ours was something special, and I don't think any of us ever 'gave up' on it.
NCC is no longer our central hub, nor can it be. For years, we knew the truest test of Nerdcore would be the day when we all left NCC...and whether or not we could survive out in 'the world'. Well, we didn't do half as well as we hoped.
We are out there now, scattered all over the area, country, even the world. The vast majority of us are still in loose contact, if not better. The Founders are still all close, save the once-again missing Sean. (See the e-group for info on the "Find a Founder!" contest.)
Right now, we could be tenfold what we once were. There is no reason Nerdcore couldn't be bigger than it ever was by far...and there is nothing stopping it.
So as of now, Nerdcore is back online. The website is still rolling as you can see, as is our forum and egroup.
So here is what I ask of you:
1. Spread the word! Like the days of old, let's see flyers, banners, links, word of mouth, and ridiculously whoreish pimping of this site.
2. Get the band back together! Nerdcore's old member base split into about a dozen small groups that rarely communicate with one another. The founders are still in touch with many of you, but not everyone by far...so get the hell out there and let the old Nerdcorians know that we're back in business!
3. Contribute! Have an idea? A suggestion? An Article? A link? A picture? Whatever it is, let's hear it! Send it all in. Email addresses and IM names are all over the site and egroup, so get in touch!
4. Tell us what you want! A band? A book? A DVD? Contests? A full-time LARP? Let us know, and you'll get it!
5. Remember what we were. Nerdcore was about reminding people to be -themselves-. It was a safehaven for the outcasts, it was the asylum of the undercultures. We never hurt people, we never broke anything, we just had fun and reminded the rest of society that they needed to take existance a bit less seriously. Don't forget what we were, because we haven't changed.
This was a short SotC, I know, but it was important. I can update and upgrade this site till kingdom come, Wayne and I can print out a million more issues of 'No Trespassing', and we can cactus 1800 mattress till we're blue in the face, but let's not going to make much happen unless you get involved.
