Armadillo Lizard |
< -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------> |
Scientific Name: Cordylus cataphractus Size: Adult length up to 10" Housing Individuals can be housed in a 20 gallon aquarium. A screen lid is essential for proper air exchange. Armadillo lizards are best kept singularly. However, for multiple pets, increase habitat size accordingly to ensure each lizard has plenty of space to move about and not interfere with tank mates. An under tank heater should be placed on the same end of the tank as the basking lamp. Multiple climbing branches are necessary as well as a shelter for hiding, especially if multiple pets are in the same enclosure. Temperature/Humidity Day time temperatures should range between 70ºF and 85ºF on the cooler end of the tank, and the warmer side should be around 95ºF to 105ºF, this can be created with an appropriate size basking light for the enclosure. The night time temperature should remain between 65ºF and 75ºF. The humidity for these lizards should be kept around 45%. Lighting These lizards are mainly active during the day, and they require 8-10 hours of UV lighting each day to maintain good health. A UV light can be bought at most pet stores. The use of a timer will assist in maintaining an accurate schedule of light periods. Feeding/Watering Armadillo lizards are insectivorous (eat mainly insects). Crickets should be the main part of thier diet, and they should be dusted with a vitamin/calcium powder. They should be no larger then the space between the lizards eyes. They shoudl be feed as many crickets as they will eat in a 10-15 minute time frame. Other suggested insects are: mealworms, superworms, and waxworms. A shallow water bowl is necessary to keep these lizards in optimum health. Water should be changed daily. Misting the habitat occasionally will help maintain proper humidity levels and allow for these lizards to intake water in a manner to which they are accustom. Bedding Baby lizards should be kept on either paper towel, newspaper or reptile carpet. Once they are over 8" they can be kept on reptile bark, or repti-sand. Never use Calci-sand because it is not digestable and it will cause an impaction in the digestive system. Back |
