Basilisk |
Basilisk Length up to 32 inches Introduction Adult grow to be around 32 inches. Basilisks can be long-lived pets if cared for properly. They are beautiful to look at but basilisks generally do not tame easily. These water-loving animals do best in large enclosures and benefit from the use of air stones in their water bowls. If possible, small water features should be included within basilisk enclosures to simulate the moving water they are accustomed to in their native habitat. Basilisks benefit best from natural sunlight. Heating and lighting Basking temperature for these lizards should be around 105-115 degrees F. This temperature is best accomplished by the use of a heat lamp and a thermometer. The cooler side of the tank should range between 75 and 85 degrees. Nighttime temperature should remain between 65 and 75 degrees. All basilisks require ultraviolet lighting to maintain good health. Ultraviolet lighting is recommended for 12 hours per day. The use of a timer will help create a good lighting schedule. Housing Individual basilisks can be maintained in a 55 gallon terrarium. A screen lid is essential for proper air exchange. These lizards are best kept singularly. However, for multiple pets, increase habitat size accordingly to ensure each individual has plenty of space to move about and not interfere with tankmates. NEVER house two males together, the best setup would be 1 male and 3 females, in a much larger tank then a 55 gallon. Setup An under tank heater should be placed on the same end of the tank as the basking lamp. A shelter for hiding is necessary, especially if multiple pets are in the same enclosure. Misting the habitat occasionally will help maintain proper humidity levels and allow for these tropical lizards to intake water in a manner to which they are accustomed. They love to climb and love water. They can run across water for up to 10-20 meters, so larger deep water dishes would be the best. They are also rain forest lizards so you should provide plenty of real or fake plants in the enclosure. Feeding/Watering: Basilisks are mainly insectivorous (eat mainly insects). Insects should be dusted with a vitamin/calcium powder. Suggested insects are: crickets, mealworms, superworms, and waxworms. Worms such as earthworms, and red wigglers may also be included in their diet, the main source of the diet should be crickets, everything else should be used in moderation. Basilisks require large water bowls; the best size would be 2 times the size of the animal. Water should be changed daily. The humidity for these lizards should be kept at or near 70 percent. Back |
