Collared lizard 8-14" Introduction Collared lizards are beautiful lizards, they are mainly a grayish green color, with a black collar around their necks. The neck has usually has a white stripe between two black ones. Males are usually more colorful then females, having a bright color on their throat usually blue, green or even orange and may have blue patches on his belly, with generous sprinklings of white, yellow or red. Females are generally fawn or gray, taking on red or salmon-colored speckling during breeding season. Housing Collareds require a large and a very hot enclosures. A strong temperature range is essential for this rocky desert species, with a place for hot basking and a place for cooling off. You should provide high basking areas between 95-104 degrees F, daytime 75-90, nighttime 70-85. Bedding Babies should be kept on either paper towels, newspaper or reptile carpet until they reach 8 inches, to prevent an impaction. They are a mountain type of lizard, so a bedding of gravel and rocks will suite an adult collared. Other types of bedding is sand, wood chips, and paper towels. Heating and Lighting Collared lizards require a high basking temperature between 95-104 degrees F, a day temperature between 75-90 degrees and a night time temperature between 70-85 degrees. They also need a source of UV lighting. A UV light made specially for reptiles is need in order for your lizard to keep your lizard healthy. With out a UV light this lizard will develop MBD (metabolic bone disease) which will cost it its life. Diet Collared lizards are mainly carnivorous, their main diet should be crickets dusted with a calcium supplement. Other things that can be used for food is meal worms, wax worms, and silk worms. Many will also eat fruits and vegetables. As they tend to be aggressive feeders, they will cheerfully chomp any small vertebrate, including other lizards and snakes with that are around and they can overpower. Back |
