At the age of 16 Carl joined the army, where he spent 37 months in prison for insubordination. Discharged in 1910 he commenced his career of horrifying brutality against 21 men.
In 1915 on another charge, he made a deal with the DA for light time, but Carl was in for a surprise. The DA doublecrossed him and he recieved 7 years for his crime. Carl swore revenge, and said he would never serve the full sentence.
During his time at Oregon State Penintentiary, Carl continuosly attempted escape, even though every attempt had the same ending - with him being beaten. Between his attempted escapes Carl managed to set fire to the prison on two seperate occasions he also started riots. Eventually in May 1918 he escaped for good.
Carl spent the next few years traveling. He first went to South America, then Europe. He even spent time in prison in Glasgow. He eventually went back to the United States, where he stole enough money to buy himself a yacht and some liquor.
After he bought the yacht he lured ten sailors onboard with the promise of free liquor. After the men drank themselves into a stupor, Carl raped them and then shot each one in the head, proceeding with dropping thier bodies in the sea. He then sailed around robbing more yachts and performing sodomy on more men, until he was arrested, spending six more months in jail. Upon release Carl headed to the Congo.
"I sat down to think things over a bit. While I was sitting there a little kid about 11 or 12 years old came bumming around the corner. He was looking for something. He found it too, but first I commited sodomy on him and then kiled him. His brains were coming out his ears when I left him, and he will never be any deader."
"Then I went to town, bought a ticket on the Belgian Steamer to Lobito Bay down the coast. There I hired six niggers and went out hunting in the bay and backwaters. I was looking for crocodiles. I found them, plenty. They were hungry. I fed them. I shot all six of those niggers and dumped em' in. The crocks done the rest. I stole thier canoe and went back to town.
In New York he strangled a Kingston woman on June 16, 1923, "for the fun it gave me."
Carl continued traveling and killing until he was arrested for burglary in Larchmont, New York. At this time he had commited 20 murders that nobody knew about. He recieved five years for burglary and while attempting to escape he jumped out a window 30 feet from the ground on solid concrete, breaking both ankles. The ankles were left unset assuring Carl would have a permanent pronounced limp. Upon release Carl was arrested for robbery, this time in Washington.
carl was given a short sentence, but since Carl didn't like to stay in prision he was very upset and so he made his infamous threat, "I'll kill the first man that bothers me." And so on June 20, 1929 Carl smashed the head of robert Wamke. This murder gave Carl the death sentence. While on death row Carl addmited to all his other crimes and told everyone that he was not the least bit sorry for the families of the 21 victims that he had raped and killed. He also took credit for sodomizing over 1000 men. He was hung on september 5, 1903.
