Dick and Jane basked in the glory of their fame for many, many years. Spot tagged along and provided action. This darling trio introduced most of us to the printed word and the joy of reading.

"See Dick run. See Jane run. See Spot run. See Dick run after Jane. See Dick catch Jane and pinch her. Hear Jane yell. See Spot run away from these boring kids."

And then along came Dr. Seuss and Dick, Jane and Spot were cast aside to become "out of print, rare books."

I must have been born before Dick and Jane came on the scene. I recall another duo, "Alice & Jerry" who had the same boring experiences.

These early childhood readers whetted my appetite for the printed page, and I thank them for introducing me to a world of action, thrills, information and pure pleasure.

There is no friend like a good book. It's always available to give you comfort, knowledge and excitement.
