	When Wayne was a younger player growing up in Canada he wore number 9 to honour his favourite player, Mr Hockey, Gordie Howe, who wore number 9. When Wayne got to the Ontario hockey league (OHL) to play for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, there was already a player wearing number 9 so after trying a few other numbers Wayne decided to wear two 9’s. Number 99. After Gretzky's retirement from the ice as a player, the NHL retired the number 99, in honour of Great One, for the entire league so that no one can ever wear that number again .
