For all the readers who aren't farmilar with Decrepit Birth, could you tell alittle about the band?
Decrepit Birth is a modern style death metal band, building upon the blocks of the early 90s death metal scene.
We are a band with serious intentions to create an original sound, with great speed and accuracy. Originally formed in the mid 90s by guitarist Matt Sotelo and vocalist Bill Robinson, the intentions of the band have always been the same...ultimate brutality! In September of 2001, Matt and Bill joined forces with ex-Deprecated bassist Derek Boyer. The three of them started writing material for a full-length album. Tim Yeung came out to Matt's home recording studio to begin tracking for the up-coming release as a session drummer. We knew of Tim's insane skills from his work in bands like HATE ETERNAL, AGIEL, and AURORA BOREALIS. The album they started entitled "..And Time Begins" is avalible worldwide through Unique Leader Records or through the band. Not long after the release, Derek was asked to join the legandary SUFFOCATION and the band thought it was a great oppertunity for him, so he left Decrepit Birth, but he is still a great friend to us. Myself and Risha had a band called LIGATURE during this time. We where having a very hard time finding a sutible drummer and due to this, eventually things fell apart. We had been good friends with Matt and Bill for years since we all live in Santa Cruz and the metal scene is very small there. Matt heard of our demise and asked us to join Decrept Birth and of course we said "Hell yeah mutha fucka!" However, the search for a drummer was far from over. Due to Tim only being a session drummer for the album, we still had no one to fill that slot. After what seemed like would be a never ending search for the right drummer, we found our man in KC Howard of ODIOUS MORTEM. Finally now with a full band and permanant line up we are ready to destroy the world!!!
Sounds like a long ride so far!! You guys have one album, "...And Time Begins", has there been any work on a sophmore album?
Yes, currently Matt has written one song and has two more in the works, and I have written one song and am almost complete with another. We plan to go into serious writting mode for the next album sometime after this summers Bloodletting Tour.
Who are some of your personal influences?
My biggest influence has been Gorguts, Suffocation, Deeds of Flesh, and Death, but I am influenced by everything around me all the time. Right now my biggest influence in writting has been Odious Mortem, Necrophagist, and Psycroptic.
Thoes are some killer fucking bands! How have people reacted to your music on tours and through record sales?
Record sales have been great and so far we have only played about 5 shows due to only recently getting our line up completed, but the turnout and fan reaction has been incredible! We cant wait to play this summers Bloodletting Tour and get out to some other states and crush thoes fucking clubs! We have een waiting for a long time to finally do this shit and we aren't holding nothing back this summer!!! Prepare to be destroyed!!!
What are some of the lyrical themes you guys like to discuss through your songs?
We like to let people make their own interpretations about the lyrical themes of our music, but the overall concept of "...And Time Begins" is basically, "man destroys the earth so in turn, the earth destroys man". There is alot of sebtext and meaning in our lyrics but we like to leave that to people to determin on their own.
Has Decrepit Birth played overseas yet?
No, and we can't fucking wait man!!!!!!!!!!!! Overseas tours always destroy and we are very eager to do one!
Who are some of the bands that Decrepit Birth has played with so far and do you have any shows lined up with anyone as of now?
So far we have played with DISGORGE, ODIOUS MORTEM, SLEEP TERROR, and ELEMENT. Bloodletting this summer will be with PSYCROPTIC and VILE. Also we have some shows lined up with SEVERED SAVIOR, CARNIVOUS, ODIOUS MORTEM, SLEEP TERROR, DEAD SYNDICATE, IMPALED, and ENGORGED. The future for us looks great!!
If you could tour with any band, active or non, who would it be?
Best line up ever would be: SUFFOCATION, GORGUTS, CRYPTOPSY, IMMOLATION, and DECREPT BIRTH
Shit that would be sweet!! Ok Mike, last question. Do you think the metal scene is getting stronger?
I think it's getting much stronger lately with amazing bands emerging from all over the world. Especially in Holland and the Czech Republic. So many good bands are active right now its unbelieveable. Also with the internet and PC home studios it is alot easier for bands to get there music heard now days and to record/self produce there albums. Definetly the scene is getting stronger!!
