August Members Contest Judge's statement by Esther M. Leiper-Estabrooks What a pleasure to judge a contest with such high-quality entries! Ideas and presentations were varied, and imagery overall was vivid and specific. I chose the First Prize poem, "I Hear You," set at Machu Pichu, because so much is implied under, around and over the eighteen lines. A shape poem about an American butte, "Devil's Tower," claims Second Prize, and Third Prize goes to a serene blank verse piece, "Franconia's Mountains." The first two poems hold a spiritual quality; the third embodies tranquility and continuance. The three Honorable Mention poems are each delightful. I can honestly say that if these six poems had not been entered at all, the quality of the remaining poems was such that three winners and three honorable mentions could have been readily found, and would also reflect great credit on the authors and the New Hampshire Poetry Society. All participants are to be congratulated. August Members Contest First prize "I Hear You" Madonna Robinton Second prize "Devils Tower" Karen-lisa Krueger Third prize "Franconia's Mountains" P.M.
