Feeding & Filtration
Back to Puffer Care page
Puffers are considerately choosy eaters and will only eat meaty food. Puffers are also carnivores, they won't eat any plants. Many important aspects of feeding must be considered. Puffers have a high metabolism rate and should be fed at least once a day. Puffers will only accept meaty food, e.g. shrimps and worms. Puffers will readily accept live and frozen food. Most puffers will leave commercially processed food like freeze dried food and pellets although there are exceptions.Puffers also need crustacean food like snails and cockles in their daily diet. The reason is simple, like rodents, their teeth grow continuosly for the rest of their life. If they are not fed properly, their teeth will grow to a point where they are unable to eat and starve. Puffers are also very messy fishes. Simply, they eat a lot and produce lots of waste.  Additionally.they are very messy eaters too, they like to spray their food all over the tank. Because of this, puffer tanks need a very efficient filter and a large tank to ensure that you do not have to do water changes too frequently. Puffers do not tolerate ammonia and nitrites very well, so keep these levels in check.
