Scrappy Starts

Another name for this block is the Friendship Star. This is a great block for doing swaps, because you get back such an array of colors back. They make a real scrappy quilt.

If you're really good at half square triangle then this block will be a piece of cake to make any size you want.

The secret to making half square triangles , is to add 7/8 inch to your finished size square you want to make. So if you want to make a 9 inch block = you need 9 patchs to make up the block. Each patch must be 3 inchs. 3 squares across and 3 squares down, 3 (finished size) inches wide will make a 9 inch block.( unfinished would be 9 1/2" block.)
So take your finished size = 3 inches, add 7/8 inch. So you'll need to cut out squares that are 3 7/8".

But for now I will give you the directions for making them a 9 inch finished block.
First pick 2 colors from your stash. You can get 2 blocks from one set of FQs. Pick out a MEDIUM or a DARK valued fabric for your star and corner triangles. Then choose a LIGHT value for the background.
Lay your light FQ right side down on top of your dark FQ. Rotary cut into strips 3 7/8 inch wide . Then take your strips and cut into 3 7/8 inch wide squares.
With the light side still facing you,(and the dark square underneith) draw a line from corner to corner diagonally.
Now stitch 1/4 inch away from the drawn line, on both sides.
Cut apart on your drawn line, and press towards the dark triangle.

Now place your half square triangles according to the picture above and stitch them together. Don't worry that your points aren't all the way to the edge of the fabric. You'll be making the points when you stitch all the pieces together.

Go crazy and use up those unwanted FQs in your stash. You'll be amazed how great they look when mixed into a scrappy quilt.
