Please be warned once you've read this, any offense taken to the contents of this site rest solely with the viewer. All blame belongs to the viewer and not to the owner of the Red Coat who took a great deal of time to make sure the warnings were obvious and clear. If gay relationhips between anime characters makes you squirm but you read fics marked as such anyway, you can blame your own stupidity.
Here I've provided for you a list of terms that will help you navigate this site. Some of you may be familiar with these already, some may not. It took me a bit of time to figure them out but I finally did. I hope this can help at least one person get more enjoyment out of some fansites now!
The Words
Angst: Feelings of depression, anguish, heartbreak, and torture; A common occurence in fanfics
AU: Alternate Universe; Characters are placed in situations that are impossible in the offical established timeline
Crossover: Characters from two or more series meet and interact
Deathfic: Character death, usually central to the plot
Fluff: Bubbly, light-hearted, and happy with little true content
Humor: Um... haha funny...?
IC: In Character; Characters are written in a way that's consistent with their behaviour in the series
Lemon: Graphic sexual content; Highly detailed and graphic descriptions of genitalia and sensitive body parts as well as specific sexual acts (ie - penetration, oral sex, etc, etc are lemon)
Lime: Contains strong inferences about sexual behavior; Avoids graphic descriptions of genitalia and sensitive body parts and specific sexual acts (ie - petting, kissing, etc, etc are lime)
NC: Non-consentual (ie - unwanted sexual gestures, rape, etc, etc)
Original Character: One or more original characters
OOC: Out of Character; Characters behave in a way that's inconsistent with the personality as established by the anime they're from (ie - Heero being happy, smiling, or laughing)
PWP: Plot? What Plot? Purely a sexual fic with no plot
Sap: Pure sugar and everyone's happy
Songfic: Based on and set around song lyrics
Shonen ai: Boy love; I interpret this is something lighter than lime, something more like a crush or a relationship without sex
Squick: Potentially offensive/disgusting; I interpret this as something that makes you want to gouge your own eyeballs out and stand in a scalding hot shower until your flesh melts away to feel semi-normal again; something that could scar the psyche
Violence: Obscene amounts or very graphic violence
Yaoi: Male/male relationships; I interpret this as the general catergory for any m/m relationship with any sort of physical intimacy.
Yuri: Female/female relationships; Interpreted like yaoi only it's with girls
The Numbers
Each main Gundam Wing character is represented by a number. They are as follows:
All other characters (Relena Peacecraft, Sally Po, Rashid, etc) are represented by their names.
The Pairings
+ signifies close friendship
x signifies more than friendly relationships
Common pairings (that I've seen) include (but are definitely not limited to):
The order of the numbers in the pairing is also important. It tells each characters' role in the relationship. The number listed first is the seme or the aggressor. The second number is the uke or the receiver. Or, to use more common terms, the first numberlisted is the top and the second is the bottom.
Personally, I'm a big fan of 13x6/6x13. I'm also partial to 6x2 and I've found myself thinking more and more on writing a 1x4.
Deciphering the Code
With that said, you should now be able to interpret the labels on the fanfics here. For example, a story labeled 'AU, yaoi, 13x6' means what?
That's right! It takes place in an alternate universe and contains a male/male relationship between Treize and Zechs, with Treize as the seme and Zechs as the uke.
