Born and raised in Westchester County, just north of New York City, Roger Howarth seemed destined for the stage -- his father was involved in theater and wrote plays. He resisted the acting bug and studied political science at George Washington University, but left after one semester to join an intense acting program at The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in Connecticut.

Plenty of stage work -- including several seasons at the prestigious Williamstown, MA Theatre Festival (where Grayson McCouch, Dusty, also performed) -- followed, but after he and wife Cari learned that they were expecting their first child in 1992, the actor turned to daytime for stability. After short stints (as similar characters) on GUIDING LIGHT and LOVING, Howarth originated the iconic, tormented frat boy-turned-rapist Todd on ONE LIFE TO LIVE, for which he won a Daytime Emmy (for Outstanding Younger Actor in 1994), two Soap Opera Digest Awards (Outstanding Younger Leading Actor, 1995, and Outstanding Villain, 1998) and an especially loyal fan base, even by soap standards. After years of coming and going from OLTL, while working in prime-time and theater, his exit in March, 2003 seemed final; his return to daytime in a new role (as AS THE WORLD TURNS's Paul) two months later came as a shock to many. Howarth lives in New York City with his wife and children.

A sweet boy in an unhappy home, Paul had no idea that his life would suddenly be uprooted by the arrival of Barbara Ryan and James Stenbeck. At the age of three, Paul was taken away from his adopted family and placed in the care of his real parents, Barbara and James. Unfortunately the marriage was not a happy one and his parents divorced soon after and Paul was denied access to his father. Frustrated and not understanding why he couldn't see his father, Paul lashed out at his mother's fiancé and blamed him for his parents' breakup. James fueled the fires and convinced Paul that his mother was to blame. When James died, Paul continued to idolize his father and resented his mother's hatred of him.

Then James miraculously resurfaced. Now a teenager, Paul was determined to get to know his father and refused to tell anyone, except for his best friend, Andy Dixon, that he'd been in contact with him. Paul refused to believe everyone's claims that James was a dangerous man and continued to see him. Paul's eyes were finally opened when he saw his father try to kill John Dixon. Desperate to save the life of his best friend's father, Paul told James he'd go with him anywhere. Not long after, James perished in a fire. Or so everyone thought. During this time, Paul become close to his father's lover, Emily Stewart and despite his mother's strong disapproval, he found a friend and a lover in her. When James turned up alive again, Paul warily agreed to meet with him. Unfortunately, the meeting turned into a police shoot-out with James holding Paul hostage and luckily Paul escaped. Disillusioned, Paul went to see Emily only to find his father trying to kill her! Desperate to save Emily, Paul fatally shot his father. (Or so he though) Disgusted with himself and his father, Paul changed his last name to Ryan and left Oakdale to find himself.

After a few years in Europe, Paul returned to town with a brilliant idea--to form an internet company. In town trying to find backers, Paul, who was still haunted by thoughts of his father, met the sweet Sarah Kasnoff and immediately took a liking her, though she intitially found him closed-off and arrogant. Sensing an intelligence in Sarah, Paul hired her to be his assistant. Soon Sarah realized that Paul's arrogance was simply a defense mechanism and softened towards him. Soon the pair began dating and later left town together.

Years later, tragedy struck when Barbara was caught in an explosion. Blaming himself for not protecting his mother and her company, Paul decided to stay in Oakdale to help her regain what she'd lost. Almost immediately upon arriving in town, Paul, who'd long since broken up with Sarah, saw a woman he thought was Lily Snyder only to learn that it was her long-lost twin sister, Rose. Intrigued in this colorful woman, the pair struck up a friendship with Rose helping him as he tried to keep Craig away from BRO (Barbara Ryan Originals), and as he tried to prove Craig's guilt in the explosion. Craig was ultimately exonerated, but Paul was grateful to Rose for her help. He constantly reassured her that her brassy ways were endearing, not disgraceful, and that they were a part of the reason why he cared so much about her. In him, Rose found a man who could love her for her self, not who she looked like.

Unfortunately, Barbara hated her from first sight, and tried everything she could to break them up, even blackmailing Rose by uncovering her past a call girl, but Rose told Paul. When Paul told her it didn't matter, she turned the tables on Barbara, threatening to spill her dirty plans to Paul unless she left their relationship alone. Barbara complied, at least temporarily. Rose and Paul became lovers. Then one day, Rose's ex-boyfriend, Vince, dropped back into her life. A series of events convinced Paul that Rose still had feelings for Vince and the pair broke up. Knowing that someone (possibly Barbara or Lucinda) was behind everything, Rose agreed to meet Vince to discuss the situation and unbeknownst to everyone, she promptly disappeared. Not long after, Paul learned the horrible truth: Rose didn't leave him, she'd been kidnapped by his own parents! Disgusted by his mother's bitterness and willingness to let James manipulate her, Paul swore off both his parents and prayed that Rose would be found. Luckily Rose finally escaped from the spa she was being held at and reunited with Paul. Unfortunately their reunion didn't go very smoothly. Horribly disfigured, Rose shut Paul out of her life. However Paul wasn't willing to let her turn him away and told her that nothing mattered except them being together. Though the damage to Rose's face was corrected, the couple faced another crisis concerning Rose's family diamond. Not long after Rose's face was restored, she and her adopted father found their houses ransacked. Learning that a criminal named Cooley was after them for the bill of sale for the diamond, Rose went to war-torn Avannya. Concerned for her welfare, Paul followed. After a harrowing adventure Paul returned to Oakdale while Rose went to New Jersey to care for her father.

Back in town, Paul was convinced that Marshall Travers, who was running for D.A., was helping his father evade justice and sought to prove it. Looking into Travers's background only got a young woman named Brandy killed and Paul on trial for her murder. Though he was exonerated when it was discovered that James killed Brandy, Paul bitterly resented the fact that Rose wasn't there for him. Though the pair was able to work through their problems, they found trouble in the form of Paul's old friend, Dusty Donovan. Very glad to see Dusty, Paul ignored Rose's concerns that he was a less than noble man and welcomed Dusty's friendship. Unfortunately Paul would find himself betrayed by everyone he cared about. Mere weeks after Rose encouraged Paul to invite his mother to their wedding, Paul would learn that Rose was involved in a plot to Kidnap Barbara in order to keep Carly from losing her job at Monte Carlo. Shocked by his fiancee's duplicity, he was further shocked when Dusty confessed thatt Barbara was paying him to break up he and Rose! Disillusioned and bitter, Paul left town with his father on his mind. Later, his family would learn that his plane had crashed--Paul was presumed dead!

But like his father, Paul would resurface. After being cared for by a kindly fisherman, Paul decided to let his family believe he was dead and disappear forever. However, James lured him back to Oakdale by having Rose kidnapped. After, rescuing Rose from immediate death (but with her too weak to realize it was him), Paul confronted his father who urged him to strike back at his enemies instead of hiding from them. Soon after, Paul would reveal himself to his family and made it his goal to keep Jennifer and Will away from Barbara. what followed next was a game of one-upmanship between Barbara and Paul beginning with Paul bringing in Jennifer's former gold-digging European boyfriend and setting it up so that Jennifer would see Barabara paying him to leave town. Though Jennifer temporarily turned away from Barbara, Barbara was able to convince her that Paul was the one who set the whole thing up. In the meantime, Paul's feelings for Rose unexpectedly changed. Although at first he ignored her and appeared indifferent, he suddenly started pursuing her and decided to get her away from Dusty by discrediting him. After planting bugs in Dusty's new club, Paul set it up so that Rose would find Dusty alone with Molly McKinnon. However, he then had an "attack of conscience" and confessed his misdeeds to Rose, who quickly forgave him. After Paul declared his love for her, Rose, despite Dusty's warnings that Paul was only using her to get revenge, agreed to marry him and move to Paris so they could begin a new life together. However, Dusty was still convinced that Paul hadn't forgiven Rose, especially when he learned that Paul never bought an apartment in Paris as he claimed to. Though she didn't want to leave Oakdale, Paul convinced her that in order to make a fresh start they had to leave the town behind. Receiving harrassing telephone calls, Rose tried to put up a brave front but was clearly spooked. Touched when Paul offered to hire a bodyguard for her, Rose started trusting him even more , despite his suspicous behavior (such as initially suggesting they invite the people who hate them to their wedding). During all of this, Dusty kept continuing to warn her about Paul, telling her that he was trying to isolate her in Paris so that he could hurt her. But Rose was desperate to believe that she was right about him. Then she learned that Paul was the one who had been harassing her! Horrified, Rose confronted Paul who admitted to wanting to test her. Confused, Rose went to Lily who, though not condoning what Paul did, encouraged her to give the marriage a try, while Dusty was telling her to stay away since she was in danger. Not wanting to believe that her love for Paul had been a lie, Rose went through with the wedding. It was on then that Rose found out Paul's true motive. When the minister asked for objections, Paul let loose with a tirade against Rose totally humiliating her. Then Rose collasped! Rushed to the hospital, it was learned that she'd been poisoned. 'One Life to Live's' Roger Howarth doubles up with role on new series... These days, you can hate him day and night..... Roger Howarth rises each morning about 7 a.m., has a light breakfast, kisses his wife and kid goodbye, leaves his Greewich Village apartment,catches an uptown IRT, and then works a grueling 11 hours at being one of the most despicable characters on daytime television. "I play a horrible, horrible guy," says Howarth, the 29-year-old actor who portrays serial rapist Todd Manning on ABC's "One Life to Live" and is now also starring in the new prime-time ABC drama "Prey." "On 'One Life,' I play a rapist, so it's a tricky situation for me. I'm not amazed at how many people watch it, but the same people who watch it so religiously. They don't miss a day. The target audience is women between 18 and 40 and they get it; they understand that I'm just an actor playing a role. But because I play such a horrible guy, it sometimes botherms me when some people aren't able to understand that it's just make-believe. "So it's also very important that the writing is responsible. Right now, I'm proud to be part of a story that shows that sexual violence is a real problem and not a joke." Howarth, who won a Daytime Emmy in 1004 and is voted by viewers as the best soap opera villain almost every year, is one of the top five male soap stars, with a salary of $4,000 a day. (!!! I want that gig!!!) Howarth is guaranteed three days a week and usually works five. "I get to the studio at about 8:30 in the morning," he says. "We do a rehearsal with just the actors and the director, in our street clothes. Then at 10 o'clock we go upstairs to the studio and we rehearse for the cameras. Then we have lunch. At 1 o'clock, we tape the show, which takes about six to eight hours. And except for some added music, what we shoot is what you see on TV. There's a cliché in daytime TV that goes, 'We do here in a day whatwould take a feature film eight months.' 'A different show every day' Soap actors perform before three cameras, recording the show on videotape in a process that Howarth says is close to his theatrical roots as screen acting can get. "I love that we do a different show every day," he says. "We shoot between 70 and 80 pages of dialogue for a 44-minute show in a single day. Then at about 7:30 in the evening, I take the subway home. If it's still nice out, I'll take my 5-year-old son to the park or a friend's house, or have some of his friends over. My wife Cari and I think New York is the best place in the world to raise a kid." Howarth was born and raised in Tarrytown, the son of a former New York World Telegram reporter who packed in the news business after the JFK assassination to teach drama in high school. "So I grew up around acting, but I tried to resist it," he says. "I took political science in college but kind of felt like I was cheating, that I was preparing myself to fail as an actor. So I signed up for apprenticeship programs in regional theaters inMassachusetts and spent as much time as I could watching, selling brownies during intermission and carrying spears. And finally got a couple of shots on stage." With soaps, you clean up.... An agent noticed him, and when Howarth moved to New York City, and 10 years ago he landed a role in a play at the Public Theater. "It was a nice play to start," he says. "I never had to wait a table. Good thing too, because I would never have figured out the math." Howarth married writer/actress Cari Stahler, and eked out a living in theater. When Cari became pregnant in 1992, Howarth turned to daytime television. "Cari was supporting my acting habit," he says. "I was doing an eight-week show at the WPA Theater on 23d St. Someone who was on 'As the World Turns' got sick, and so I understudied fo rhis part on that soap for one day. And I realized I made as much dough in that day as I did in the eight-week run ofthe play. So we did the math and I started auditioning for soaps. And soon he was one of the hottest stars on daytime TV. Shootouts & car chases Howarth became so popular on soaps last year ABC cast him in the lead male role opposite Debra Messing in the new prime-time sci-fi thriller "Prey." "I shot 12 episodes of 'Prey" at the same time I was doing 'One Life to Live,' " he says, "flying back and forth from New York to Los Angeles. The difference was remarkable. To begin with, we get like a week or more to shoot an episode. And instead of 80 pages of dialogue a day, we shot about six. And you get out of the studio, to do shootouts and car chases, and all that neat stuff. "It was a crash course in film acting. And I'm playing an equally sinister character, although he has a different sense of humor than the one I play in the soap." If "Prey" doesn't make it to next season, ABC has a development deal with Howarth to come up with another primetime show. "ABC has been very nice to me," Howarth says. "They've let me out of school to go play with the other kids in prime time. As much as I enjoy coming to work to do the daytime show, it was a real thrill to do something in another setting."
