Western/Historical
Setting: Southern Missouri

For two years now, Hannah Rockfort has managed to care for her three young daughters, despite the Civil War. General Order 11 is about to make life more difficult. In an attempt to control the notorious confederate Bushwhackers, the Union Army has been clearing people off their lands and burning their homes.

Hannah has heard from her husband, Paul, only once, since he was forced to serve in the army, but she hasn't given up hope. She'll do whatever it takes to get herself and her girls back on their ranch, to wait for Paul's return.

The Burnt District, based on historical fact, tells of one woman's determination to keep her family together. Hannah's strength and bravery keep her going, and win her the support of two unlikely people. The young lieutenant, and the Osage scout, both admire the feisty woman. The three young daughters are inspiring and provide wonderful examples of courage and ingenuity.

The Burnt District is different from the usual Civil War story and one to be enjoyed. The main characters are a pleasure to follow and have you rooting for them to succeed. Their unorthodox plans will keep you following them through their adventures until you reach the end of their story.

Ms Massey's original approach to the Civil War era makes this story well worth reading.
