Lucinda Fairfax left a New York farm to go to Yorkshire and take over the inheritance left by her English father. She had planned to sell the land but now finds, that's impossible. Everything is to pass on to the son she's expected to have one day. Before she's even seen the property, she has a run in, almost rundown, with her strange neighbor, the Duke of Ravenswood. She doesn't want to be attracted to the nobleman, but so far, what Lucinda wants hasn't worked out in her favor.

Gideon Blackthorne, the Duke of Ravenswood, also known as the Devil Duke, is a solitary man with dark secrets. He knows people will warn his new neighbor away from him, but his attraction to the pretty miss is unexpected and hard to fight. He's well aware what she would think of him, if she knew what he was hiding. Can he deal with the past and convince Lucinda to find a place in her life and heart for him?

Suspicion thrives for the Devil Duke in this gothic romance. Lucinda may find Gideon fascinating, but the cryptic warnings people give her, leave her torn. Does she believe them, or does she sever all ties with the mysterious nobleman? Gideon and Lucinda play their parts well in this intriguing tale. While he keeps things to himself, she has her own ghosts to deal with.

Secondary characters spur the story on, to its conclusion by giving out cryptic clues about the Duke. The servants' and farmers' attitudes are mixed, but make the story more interesting. Descriptions of the Fairfax and Blackthorne estates add to the gothic atmosphere.

Evelyn Rogers is at her writing best with this gothic novel. Make yourself comfortable and spend a romantic evening with DEVIL IN THE DARK
