What a refreshing, enchanting winner awaits you in this spirited tale!
Meryl Spellbinder comes from a unique family of witches, consisting of a loving Aunt with magical powers which somehow seemed to have bypassed Meryl. Not bemoaning this fluke, Meryl is a passionate, high-spirited woman who gets on with life, that is until while jogging, she meets a mysterious kilt-clad Scotsman. His touch to the pendant on her neck sets off mysterious voices in her head and the beginning of a passionate connection to her spirit.
Tristan and his people need Meryl's help. Without her, his people's "old ways" will be lost forever and she has the power to prevent that loss. To do that, she must travel with him to the 14th century, lead and win over a people who will view her with suspicion and fear, visit some other centuries, and discover and implement innate powers she has to surmount numerous obstacles. Other spirits have different plans for her.
Many paranormal or time travel novels have a formulaic plot to them that, to this reader anyway, can weaken a tale with predictable ending and romance. THIS ISN'T ONE OF THEM! The weaving of characterization and tense, concise plot deepens but smoothly flows in the most satisfying manner. One wants to turn the pages faster while getting further into the fantastic yet incredibly believable story. The sources of benign and maleficent power are totally unpredictable yet seamlessly unfolding through the exciting pages and chapters, with a conclusion including some very favorite characters of this reader.
Jealousy, greed, poison, spells, time travel to different centuries, wisdom, animal protection, hiding mists of protection, barren and lusciously beautiful settings and vibrant personalities fill a wondrous portion of history that Meryl is bound to lead, fear, and compel to "higher" places. You will see, hear, touch and emotionally bond with each very human and supernatural character and setting herein.
Description defies the richness contained within this author's first fictional tapestry. Voracious readers often sense the hard "work" in the writing craft of each novel; this writer has a natural gift for the art of writing that seems to pour forth without effort or manipulation. How rare and delicious to meet this infrequent appearance.
Marion Zimmer Bradley is one of this reviewer's most revered writers. In a very different yet similar manner, Marissa St. James has given us a mystical tale inviting us back to the "old ways" and yet offering us so very much more!
