Setting: Penruan Castle, Cornwall, 1129

The barons of Wroxley and Penruan are once again embroiled in a dispute over a tract of land. Years ago, the problem was supposedly settled by the king. Now, King Henry has decided a marriage will take place to unite the families and end the dispute once and for all time. Since the bride to be is barely six years old and recently ill, eldest daughter Emma has offered to go in her younger sister's place. Whether or not Penruan will accept the substitute bride, remains to be seen.

Dain of Penruan, doesn't want to marry, especially the daughter of his enemy. What a surprise to find his bride is an adult and not the child he expected. Dain has all he can do to ignore the attractive woman and keep his plans intact. In the background, Dain's mother, the Lady Richendra has a great deal to say about the arrangement, and very loudly. Why is she determined to keep the land feud going? Will Emma 'survive' her mother-in-law's vendetta?

Flora Speers has written a tale blending romance and magic. The story is well written, with descriptions and dialogue enhancing the plot. Dain and Emma are up against more than they realize. Everyone is holding back secrets from the not so happy couple. Dain has the unenviable position of being caught between his wife and his mother. Who will he defend?

There are a couple secondary characters who take on more important roles than just filling in background. What does Agatha, the healer, know that could affect Dain's life? Young Blake is a loveable character and makes a wonderful page for Emma. From beginning to end, the characters fill your imagination and keep you entertained.

A Passionate Magic is one of those enchanting, and enchanted, stories you'll find hard to forget.
