Cara has just had a marvelous sixteenth birthday, spent with her parents. The day ends in tragedy when their car is hit head on. Cara is thrown clear of the accident, but witnesses the devastating explosions. She wakes up to find she's being held securely, but a male voice offers her warmth and comfort. Cara awakens again to find herself alone, but before her rescuer returns, she disappears.
Nine years later, Cara has finally convinced herself Michael Macpherson never really existed, until something calls her back to the cave and she finds him wounded. Michael's reappearance in her life triggers her involvement in a mystery four generations old. Why is Nick Vargas so intent on getting Cara's paintings? What really happened to Michael's mother?
The Promise is a tightly woven tapestry of deceit, murder, coming of age, and redemption. Cara and Michael have to figure out how they've been able to travel back and forth between their separate times of 1888 and the present. In the meantime, someone is systematically killing off the members of Michael's family and time is running out to discover who and why.
Dee Davis will hold your interest as she adds a few twists to the plot. She carefully reveals clues spread over both past and present to build tension on two fronts. Loralee and Patrick are secondary characters, but hold almost as much importance in the story as do Cara and Michael. You see the surrounding country through Cara's eyes, the eyes of an artist and feel the pain of Loralee's past. The Promise flows with tension and romance, and will keep you wondering to the end, which time the main characters will end up in. This story promises to be an entertaining read.
