Gavin Norfork, Marquis of Greenhaven, has quite a reputation with the ladies of his social circle, and he doesn't let a little thing like marriage stop him. His father's will stipulates if Gavin should seek a legal end to his marriage, then all his property and title will go to charity. Gavin's wife isn't what he thought he saw two years earlier, and his life takes an interesting twist when he runs into her at a ball.
The Marchioness of Greenhaven, Christine Norfork, sets out to publicly embarrass her husband, hoping to force him into having their marriage annulled. Christine's goal is to see all her husband's property auctioned off, and the proceeds distributed to the poor of Greenhaven's parish. Both she and Gavin have an uphill battle to fight, with a few discoveries along the way. Can she keep distance between herself and her handsome husband, and win her cause?
Rhonda Thompson delves into the world of title and privilege to tell the story of two misguided people. Christine's motives are well intended, but her methods to achieve her goals are questionable. She is just as determined to take everything away from her husband, as he is to hold on to it.
While these characters play with fire, someone's going to get burned. The romance heats up in the most unlikely way and sets off sparks in other directions. There is a mistress who refuses to let go, and admirers who are almost constantly trailing after Christine. The suspense deepens when attempts are made on Christine's and Gavin's lives, but neither is sure who the real target is.
A light touch is added to the story in the guise of Tillie and Graves. These two servants are amusing, and create momentary relief from the main plot of the story.
A Scandalous tale may be just the break you need, and Rhonda Thompson has done a great job in provided it.
