Regency suspense
Setting: London

In Rome, Italy, Lavinia Lake doesn't believe Tobias March's claim someone is using her shop as a point to exchange information to conduct illegal activies. While he destroys everything in the shop, he gives her and her niece fifteen minutes to pack what they can and get out.

Several months later, in London, Tobias discovers Lavinia has gone into his line of work, and isn't happy about it. He and Lavinia form an uneasy alliance, since they seem to be working on the same mystery. A missing diary and several murders are clues to the last member of the Blue Chamber, an illegal organization. One of the members is a spy, wanted for treason against the English crown during the war against Napoleon. Can these two stubborn minded, strong willed people put aside their differences long enough to solve the mystery?

Amanda Quick's latest foray into regency England holds readers in suspense throughout this page turner. Tobias and Lavinia are the most unlikely two people to become partners in solving a mystery. Her niece Emeline, and Tobias' brother-in-law, Anthony, find the business arrangement amusing at times. Both young people see changes the older couple aren't entirely aware of.

The twists and turns of this plot are riveting. Just when you think you have it solved, you find there's another clue to consider. The main characters are delightful, while secondary characters keep them on their toes. The waxworkers are ingenius in their creativity. A subtle sense of humor shows itself now and again to offer a bit of relief from the tension.

When it comes to compelling mysteries, you'll like something Slightly Shady.
