Bedie Breckenridge suffered through an abusive marriage at the hands of her police officer husband. When she finally left him, he committed suicide, and in the four years since, she feels as if he is still tormenting her. Bedie applies for a position in the foster care system and is given an eleven year old girl, who has never stayed in one home for any length of time. Bedie wonders if she's made a bad decision, but she's determined to do her best by the child.

June Fairfax isn't your ordinary eleven year old. Since the age of five, when her great grandmother died, June has been in and out of numerous foster homes. Her famous temper and destructive ways assure she won't stay in any one place very long... until she walks into Bedie's house. For the first time June feels she has found a home, and she wants to stay. Incidents occurring on the third floor of the house may put an end to that hope. June has a secret and the unwanted visitor to her room will do anything to be rid of the girl.

Ghosts and forms of ESP are the mainstay of this paranormal story. The House in the Steeple holds secrets, which not even the ninety three year old owner knows of, and he grew up in the neighborhood. It's up to Bedie, June and parole officer, Tom Lillard to ferret out the secrets and end the threats to June.

A malevolent ghost plays the part of villain in this intriguing tale. Other secondary characters tend to hold back progress to the solution with their assumptions of what may be going on in the house. Bedie and June aren't about to be chased out of their home, and Tom doesn't know what to think. He's not a believer in the paranormal.

Jane Hollingsworth deepens the mystery and builds the suspense to keep you reading from page one to the end. You may not want to turn off the lights when you leave The House In the Steeple.
