When Catherine receives a letter from her older sister, Elizabeth, to come to her, the young woman wastes no time in answering her sister's plea. Catherine arrives at Whispering Oaks, only to be told Elizabeth has been missing for four days. The uncanny resemblance between the two sisters confuses even John McMahon, mistakes Cat for his missing wife.

Shortly after Elizabeth's body is found in the sugarcane fields, the mystery of how she died occupies everyone. While Catherine is drawn to John, too many unanswered questions remain. What part did John play in Elizabeth's death? What information is he refusing to tell Catherine? Did Catherine really know her sister as well as she thought?

Set shortly after the Civil War, Karen White draws you in to experience a dying way of life in the deep South. Dark secrets and betrayal are the main theme, while superstition is sprinkled throughout the plot, creating twists and turns to keep you reading. John will keep you guessing as to his guilt or innocence, while Catherine searches for answers, and finds herself drawn to young Rebecca.

The characters are focused and well developed, contributing to a tightly woven plot. Scenic descriptions fill in the background to help create an intriguing romance.
