Dogs house plan
Changing the description of the free plans to build a dogs house is used to help people who may describe a dogs home differently. An example is Australians. In Australia a dogshome plan or building a dogs home is called a kennel plan or building a kennel for dogs.
Heating a dogs house
Heating the dogs house and building a dogs home with insulation and the different insulating materials that can be used to insulate a dogs house are also presented on the free dogshouse plans and heating for a dogs house.
The doghouse plans are completely free for your personal use. The section on handy hints for insulating a new dogs house or installing insulation in an existing dogshouse or dogs home contains some insulation material that can be used to build into the dog house framing.
Insulating a dogshouse
Some dogs house designs may not allow building a dogshouse with built in insulation so some other forms of dogshouse insulation are mentioned.
The reason for building a dog home for your pet is to keep it cool in summer and warm in winter. Free plans to build a dog house have doghouse plans with insulation an heaters that are available to heat your pets home.
Heating a dogs house with insulation built into the kennel will ensure that the heating cost for keeping your pet warm is reasonable.
The heaters for a dog house can be built into the dog house or left free standing.
Dog house plans
For entertainment, the free dog house plans and other free pet home plans are presented in a form of strine and slang that was spoken and understood by a large section of the Australian population many years ago.
This form of language is now only used in some areas of outback Australia.
If you wish to bypass this Aussie presentation and go straight to the dog house plan and kennel plan please click HERE.
A glossary of the Australian slang used in the Dogshouse Plans and Kennels Plan and Insulated dogs house web site can be found at the bottom of the dogs house design page.
The dog house plan and dogshouse plans plus the Australian slang presentation will be constantly changed so please visit the free plans site again.

The Free Dog House Plans
The how to build a dogs house plans are free for your personal use. The plans to build a dogs house have been designed to allow for easy construction with the minimum amount of tools and materials.
Building a dog house
Building the dog house does not need any special carpentry skills. The plans to build a dog house start with the base measurements that are suitable for the size of your dog.
These doghouse base measurements are the guide to all following measurements.
The measurements start with the base of the doghouse. The base of the dogs house measurement is constructed as close to your dogs size plus extra space for movement. The reason for this restriction to excessive space is to maximize the amount of heat retention within the kennel or dog house.
A pet heater can be fitted to the doghouse and a good quality doghouse heater that can be used as a free standing dogs house heater or the heater for dogs can be built into the dog house framing.
The dogshouse heater can be found at small heaters
To build the dog house to a plan
the materials used can be new or second hand but the building material must not be treated with any chemicals that may be harmful to your pet. If using second hand material for the dogs house and you are unsure if the building material has been treated with a preservative chemical or any other potentially dangerous chemicals do not use the material.
Insulation for the kennel or dog house that is supplied in batt form should only be purchased new.
Care in selecting the building material also applies to any new plywood or wood purchased to build the dogs house.
How to build dogs house
The how to build a dogs house plan can have a painted or varnished finish
Paint that is to be used in the building of the dogs house should not contain any lead in it. Lead is an additive that used to be included in most commercial paints to increase the shine of the paint and to make it weatherproof.
Selecting the building materials and paint that is free from harmful preservatives and suitable to build a kennel or dog house is that some dogs like to chew on their dog home. If your pet has this habit and the doghouse has been treated or coated with a dangerous or toxic chemical it may be accidentally poisoned.
Plans to build a dogshouse
Plans to build a dogshouse need only simple tools and basic skills. Safe building rules should be observed when building a dogshouse out of second hand material.
Building the dog home will include cutting and sanding of the second hand building material. If a chemical has been added to the second hand dogs home material the builder may be affected by these chemicals by the simple action of cutting or sanding the treated plywood for the kennel.
Building a dogs home
When building the dogs home the plan can be modified to include one or more windows, insulation to keep the heat in or out and a heater for the dogs home.
If windows are to be fitted to the dogs home plan the framing can be built during construction or fitted after the dog house is built using the free dog house plan.
A doghouse heater can also be built into the the dogs home plan at this stage of building.
If glass windows are a safety concern when building the dogs home clear perspex panel or panels can be used in place of glass for the windows. The perspex panels will help to insulate the dog house and help in keeping the dogs house warm in winter.
Free plans for a dogs house
To begin building the free plans for a dogs house the base of the dogs house is the first ply wood panel that is cut.
The plans measurements you use for the dog house base will be guided by the size of your dog.
Your pet should be able to turn around comfortably inside the kennel, stand within the dogs house without touching the roof and stretch out with no part of the dogs body going outside the dogs house.
When you have determined these sizes, apply them to the base of the doghouse and this becomes the guide to all the remaining measurements for the free dogs house plan.
Free plans to build a dog house
Mark each edge of the dog house with a number or letter that corresponds to the free plans to build a dog house.
A1/A2 These measurements are equal to each length but larger than A5/A6 by approximately 20%
A3/A4 These measurements are equal to each length but larger than A7/A8 by approximately 40%
A5/A6 are base measurements equal to each other
A7/A8 are base measurements equal to each other
B1 is a side panel that is the height of your dog plus 20%
B2 is a side panel that is the height of B1 plus 20%
B3 Draw a line connecting B1 and B2 after putting in the B4 measurement.
B4 is equal to A7/A8
B1/B5 .. B2/B6 .. B3/B8 .. B4/B7 are equal measurements
Free plans to build a dogshouse
Templates can be used when building the dogshouse. The free plans to build a dogshouse will be simplified by using templates during construction.
Templates will reduce the chance of error when you build the dogshouse.
Cut out the first side B1/B2/B3/B4 of the doghouse or kennel as shown on the dog house plan or free kennel plan and use this side as a template to make the second side B5/B6/B7/B8. If the plywood you are using has different surfaces on either side make sure that the template pattern of the dogshouse side is marked on the correct surface. This will produce a better finish when sanding and painting the dogshouse
Building a dogs home
Building the dogs home back panel starts of with the edges C1 and C2.
C1/C2 panel edges are equal measurements to A5 PLUS twice the thickness of the plywood being used for the sides of the dogs home.
C3/C4 panel edges are equal measurements to B1/B5
Dog kennel plan
C5/C6 edges for the dog kennel plan front are equal measurements to A5 PLUS twice the thickness of the plywood being used for the kennel sides.
The edges C7/C8 Are equal measurements to B2/B6
Plywood that is to be used in the construction of the dog kennel should be a exterior grade of plywood. Do not choose a plywood for the dogs house
that has been
treated with any chemicals that may be harmful to your pet.
Building the dogshouse to last many seasons will need a frame that is solid. Select timber for building the dogshouse that are approximately two inches square ( 50 millimeters ). This size timber will be suitable for a large dog house.
The amount required is enough to line the inside of the base of the kennel, sides and the four corners of the kennel.
Allow a bit extra to use as guides to reposition the roof and also for runners
under the floor to keep the dogs house of the ground.
Dog home plans
Any fixtures and building material that is made of metal that is to be used to build the dog home should have a protective coating on them to prevent the metal from rusting.
Galvanized nails and screws are used to build commercial buildings and are suitable to build the dog home plans.
Use either galvanized or zinc coated nails and screws. The galvanized nails are a superior nail but with careful recessing of the nail heads below the surface of the dogs home plywood and frame, and then stopping them with a good grade wood filler, zinc plated nails should be suitable.
Plan to build a dogshouse
The use of glue to bond timber together when building the dogshouse will reduce the time taken to build the dogshouse.Selecting glue instead of nails or screws will depend on how much stress the joint is exposed to.
The dogshouse or kennel will be exposed to the weather so do not use a wood type water based glue that does not cure with a water resistant skin. A good quality stud adhesive that is used in building houses or a contact cement that is water proof will be ideal.
Do not use any paint that contains lead in it. Use an exterior grade paint for the doghouse.
Water based paints are paints that use water as a diluting medium. Water based paints that are labeled exterior grade are ideal for painting the dogshouse as they produce less fumes that may irritate your dog.
Free plans on how to build a dog house
The free plan on how to build a dog house is an easy to build doghouse that can be modified during building.
A good quality finish to the dogs house will depend on how much time is put into preparing the kennels wood surfaces.
When sanding the dogs home you start with a coarse grade sandpaper and use a fine grade sandpaper for the finish of the dogs house panels and edges.
The exception to this rule is when the dogshouse panel has a surface that only needs a light sanding before painting.
Dogs house plan
To assemble the dog house plan we start with the dog house base. Line the interior borders of the kennels base with the framing timber. Remember to cut out a section of the front that is the same size as the door opening of the dogs house.
Screw or glue and nail the sides of the kennel to the base keeping the plywood side flush with the bottom underside of the base as shown in the free dog house plans.
Fix the upright corner pieces to the side edges of the dogs house.
Position and fit the back of the dog house next. Ensure that the back plywood of the doghouse sits flush to the outside of the plywood sides and flush to the base of the dog house underside.
Then fit the front of the dogshouse with the edges flush with the sides and base underside as shown in the dogs house plan.
Dogshouse plan
At this stage of the dogshouse plan you are ready to fit the dogshouse roof.
Place the roof of the kennel in a position that is suitable for the dogshouse and fit the roof guides to the underside of the roof.
Use any framing timber left over as runners under the floor to keep the dogs house of the ground.
This is the last stage in building the dogshouse to the free dog house plan.
The next stage is cleaning up all the construction marks on the kennel surfaces and painting.
Pin punch any protruding nail heads on the dogs home just below the plywood and frame surface.
All the nail head holes that have been pin punched will need filling with a putty or wood filler and sanded back to a smooth surface when dry.
Dog house plan
Sand paper the rest of the dog house with a medium grade sandpaper then clean off all the dust and dirt with a damp cloth.
Finally give the dog house an undercoat of paint and when dry finish off with a top coat of exterior grade paint.
If any modifications are required to the dog house plan after building the dog house to the specifications of the dog house plan then leave the sanding and painting of the dogshouse till later.
To fit a window or windows to the dog house use a piece of cardboard for a template that is the approximate size of the window required.
Draw the shape of the window onto the cardboard and cut along the drawn
lines.
If the dogs house has insulation then ensure that the window cut out can be framed to hold in the dogshouse insulating material
Hold the cut out shape against the dog house wall in the position that you require the windows to be placed.
With a pencil draw the shape onto the selected wall area of the kennel, and then cut out the traced shape. If the window is large, and there is movement in the dog house wall, make a frame for the window and fix it to the wall to strengthen it.
When the construction of the dogs house and modifications for a window or dogs home heater is complete sand back any rough areas of wood on the dog home and paint.
Insulate a dog house plan
The dog house plan may need to be modified to insulate a dogs house or dog kennel. The dog house must be of sound construction as insulating a doghouse or kennel that has been poorly constructed will be a waste of time and money.
Painting the dog house with an undercoat and then an exterior grade top coat will prevent moisture from penetrating the kennel. The painted surface will help in insulating the dogs home. The choice of a paints color can help in the insulation of a dogs house.
Multiple layers of paint will ensure a long life for the kennel and produce a better finish to the dog house.
Choice of color will assist in the insulating properties of the paint.
A light colored paint should be used if the dog house is in a hot climate.
The reverse is true if the dog house needs insulation to retain heat. Then a dark colored paint should be used.
Dog house
If an existing dog house has been built with enough structural strength then a second roof can be positioned and fitted over the original dog house roof.
Building another roof to protect the dog house from the weather will reduce heating costs if a dog house heater has been fitted to the dog house.
The second roof should not be in contact with the existing roof. A space that will allow a cooling breeze to flow between the two roofs in summer, but low enough to prevent water or snow from hitting the main dog house roof will produce the maximum amount of insulation.
Doghouse
Position the doghouse with its back to any prevailing winds. In this position, most of the wind will not enter through the doghouse door and chilling your pet.
Place a piece of Hessian or similar material over the kennel or dog house entrance. The Hessian will act as a door way and help retain the heat within the doghouse. It will also insulate the doorway and act as a barrier against cold winds.
Dogs house
Raising the dogs house floor above the ground will stop moisture from entering the dogs house through the floor or kennel walls.
This will also help to prevent rot and mildew from attacking the floor or sides of the dog house.
Place the dog house in an area that is exposed to any winter sun to warm up the dogshouse. A dogs house that has been painted a dark color will also benefit the most from this natural process. Place the dog house under a shaded area in summer for natural insulation from the shade.
