He lived happily ever after." -- Willy Wonka |
. | ![]() 7/13/01- It's pronounced SKWIM. You see that quote at the top of the page?
Yeah, the one from the Willy Wonka movie.... it's officially my favorite quote. I like this one the best, because it has context for me.
It came to light recently that my father who has lived and worked in the Eastern Washington Desert for a quarter of a century, hates where he lives. He has tolerated the environment and climate for 25 years. Working at Hanford- "America's Nuclear Waste Repository" for the government.
A little over a year ago a position became available in the "Marine Sciences" division of the company. Save the fishes sounded great to my dad, but best of all, he would be transferred to Sequim (pronounced "SKWIM") way out on the Olympic Penninsula. Closer to Vancouver British Columbia than Seattle, on the shores of the Straits of Juan de Fuca, spitting distance from the Olympic National Forest. A place that my dad truly loves. The antithesis of where he lives now.
My dad applied for the job over a year ago, and came in second... another candidate got the position. My dad who never gets bummed out because he never gets his hopes up, got bummed out, he honestly thought he was the best candidate for the job.
Fast forward to the present. The winning candidate from a year ago has decided that he hates Sequim, Washington, and wants to be transferred back to the desert.
who got everything he ever wished for?" "He lived happily ever after." After a life of struggling in the desert, he'll get to work... and then retire in the place he dreamed of. Good going Dad.
I almost forgot, I'm supposed to climb Mt.St.Helens tomorrow morning. (that's me in 1994) It's an annual event (though I seem to go only half the time), always scheduled for the middle of July. There is already some grumbling brewing at home...an impending tragedy or protest-that will prevent my one solo outing per year. I recently (yesterday) convinced a friend that she should go on her planned outing... now I have to try and follow my own advice. I'll keep you posted.
