INTRODUCTION
The Library Science Department was established on 10th August 1956 (1-2) Prof. Dr. Abdul Moid was the founder Chairman of the Department. Dr. Abdul Moid was the first Ph. D. holder in Library Science from USA (as early as 1964) He was the chief librarian of Karachi University Library (renamed later as Dr. Mehmood Hussain Library) the seminar library of the Department was renamed later as Dr. Abdul Moid Memorial Library. In his memory, Dr. Abdul Moid Gold Medal is awarded by Pakistan Bibliographical Working Group to a student securing 1st position in higher certificate course.

COURSES OF STUDIES
The Department has played leading role in establishing library education in Pakistan. In beginning, a postgraduate Diploma in Library Science was offered in 1956. In 1962 M.A. in Library Science was awarded to only those who completed their first year studies and choose to leave the Department. Diploma in Library Science and a Master Degree in Library Science were awarded separately. In 1973 a semester system was introduced and a number of courses were added to fulfill the requirements of the semester system. In 1967 a Ph. D. programme was launched and a few students were enrolled. (4) Dr. Abdul Haleem Chishti was the first who secured a PH. D. degree in Library Science. In 1981 the Department celebrated its Silver Jubilee, and changed its nomenclature as "Department of Library and Information Science". New courses of Information Science and Automation were added. Names of the degree also changed to B.L.I.S. (Bachelor of Library and Information Science) Former D.L.S.C. and M.L.I.S. (Master of Library and Information Science) Former M.L.S.C., PH. D. automatically became PH. D. in Library and Information Science. In 1995 the author of this book got a Ph. D. in Library and Information under the able guidance of Dr. Jameel Jalibi, renowned scholar and the Ex-Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi. Whereas in 1981 Dr. Chishti completed his research under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Abdul Moid. Only two Ph. Ds. have been completed to date. In 1987 a programme of M. Phil was also prepared but could not be implemented. In 1995 this plan was withdrawn by the University (5). At present students are required to clear 24 courses in 4 semesters, in order to get a degree of M.L.I.S.

ALUMNI
The department has produced the largest number of alumni who are working as library Educators, Scientists and Librarians in various types of libraries in the country and in the global world. A chronology of students is as under:

The Department tried to maintain a record of their Alumni. In 1981 on the occasion of Silver Jubilee a directory was published. (6) Another attempt was made in 1995 to register the Alumni; only 40 responses were received making it impossible to compile a directory. However, their registration was transferred to the Karachi University Alumni Reunion Trust formed by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Zafar Hasnain Zaidi.

In 2002 all the courses of B.A. , BLIS, MLIS. Were revised by the University Grants Commission National Revision Committee for Library and Information Science. The meeting was chaired by Prof. Dr. Nasim Fatima, Chairperson of the Department of Library Science, University of Karachi and was attended by the 14 chairpersons and university librarians from Pakistan. DOLIS , a newsletter was also published in 2001 under her editorial leadership.
