Generation II
6. Nathaniel McWilliams
He was born in  Longside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland  in 1822, probably in February.  His christening was recorded in parish records as June 2, 1822 in parish Longside.  There is conflicting information to be found; his obit. gives birth year as 1823;  tombstone as 1825;  on the 1880 census he is listed as age 65 (1815) and marriage record of Pitsligo, Aberdeenshire, Scot. state the year of birth was 1829.

He married twice before removing to America. He married first, Isabel
Marsion/Menderson/Mairson (her surname is found to be spelled several different ways) in New Deer, Aberdeen, Scotland on November 28, 1847.  Isabel was born in Scotland and died 1861 in Scotland.  This date of death is taken from Nathaniel's obit.  She may have died in childbirth, as her youngest daughter Catherine was born the same year.

On July 6, 1863  he married  Mary Julia
Yule. Mary was born in Stryhein, Scotland, to William Yule & Barbara Gall. There are conflicting records of her birthdate. Baptism records at Episcopal Church in the Crimond Parish, Aberdeenshire, Scot. list birth her birthdate as April 6, 1829; but her obit. & tombstone state birth was in 1838.

Mary had a daughter, Barbara Yule who was born before she married Nathaniel McWilliams.  This daughter has been included in the family history, even though she is a step-child, and not related by blood to the McWilliams.
Nathaniel and Mary Julia emigrated to America in 1866/67 and located at Henderson Prairie in Clayton Co. IA.  They  later moved to Post Twp. Allamakee Co. IA and lived near Postville on a rented farm.

These abstracts from the Postville Review give interesting insight into the daily lives of Nathaniel & Mary Julia:
-
1881: Nathaniel McWilliams has had a bad time with rheumatism.
-1881: There have been many on the sick list in the neighborhood of late:  Nathaniel McWilliams wife and daughter; Evan Swenson, his father and two children; Reuben Brainard and others.
-1882, January reports of a case of small-pox in the family, but the name of the affected person wasn't given.
-1886, February tells of the birth of Nathaniels 25th grandchild.
-1887, November; Nathaniel & Julia went to Clermont to visit their daughter Mary (Wickum).  That same month Nathaniel was so ill that son John came from McGregor & daughter Kate from Sioux City to be with him.  He was an old friend of the doctor: "Dr. Shepherd comes twice daily to see him. He and the Dr. were acquaintances in Scotland and the Dr. cares for him as a brother."
-1891: Nathaniel was road supervisor for the 4th road district.  Their son James came down from Minneapolis to visit his folks for the Christmas holiday.
-1892, January:  Julia had a bout of rheumatism and in December he again was reported as being ill.
-1893, July: He was well and visiting in town.
-1894, January:  Nathaniel decides to sell his farm and ran this ad:
For sale. My farm (57 1/2 acres) is for sale, situated 5 1/2 miles northeast of Postville.  Good buildings, well, cistern and running water.  For terms, etc. apply on the premises.  N. McWILLIAMS.
-1880-1894; Nathaniel subscribed to the Postville
Review.
-1895, March; Nathaniel purchased a home in Postville on Military St. & he and Julia moved to town.
-1897: December; A year after Nathaniel died, there was  a reunion held at the E.R.A. Brainard home.  James and wife, Aleck, Willam and wife, Barbara, Jane Brainard and Anna; all of Julia's  children except Ellen attended.  [Note: Conspicuously absent from this reunion were any of her step-children!!!]

On the 1880 census Nathaniel McWilliams is living on his farm in Post twp., Allamakee Co., age 65.  Mary is age 42, keeping house, and there is the enumerators  notation: headache.  Son James is 14 working for his father as a chore boy.  William is age 12 & at school.   The other children at home are Alaxander age 6; Ellen age  4; and Anna  age 1.

On the 1900 Federal census Mary Julia can be found living in Postville village in the home on Military street.  Living with her are son Alex, daughter Amanda and granddaughter Bessie Brainard.

Nathaniel died on November 7, 1896 in Post twp. Allamakee Co. IA, at 71 years of age. Mary died on February 26, 1905. They are buried in Minert Cemetery, Post twp. Allamakee Co. IA.
"Grandma never said much about her life in Scotland or the trip over, except that she was seasick, and had to be carried off the boat."

ABERDEENSHIRE, a maritime Co. in the NE. of Scotland...... The coast is mostly bold and rocky, and with little indentation. The chief promontories are Kinnaird's Head, Rattray Head, and Buchan Ness, the last being the most easterly point of Scotland. The surface, on the whole, is hilly and mountainous. It is lowest in the districts bordering on the coasts; hilly in the interior, with much moor, but also with many slopes and hollows in a good state of cultivation; and grandly mountainous in the SW., where numerous summits, including Ben Macdhui (4296 ft.), rise above 3000 ft. Much of the country is well-wooded. The chief rivers are the Dee, Don, Ythan, Ugie, and Deveron. Granite is the principal rock, and is extensively quarried for exportation.

Generation I
1. William McWilliam
I know very little about William McWilliam.  The earliest record I have found, to date, is the parish record from Longside, Aberdeen, Scotland recording his marriage to Janet 'Jessie' Sangster on May 10, 1812.

The birth or death dates of either William or Jessie have yet to be discovered, but the parish registers record the births or christenings of their children.  I presume they lived out their lives in Scotland and are buried there, as there is no evidence that they immigrated to America.

William McWilliam and Janet Sangster had at least 5 children:
2.        i.     Barbra McWilliam (1813-?)
3.       ii.     David McWilliam (1815-?)
4.       iii.     Janet Hay McWilliam (1817-?)
5.       iv.    Williamina Anne Baigrie McWilliam (1820-?)
