This was truly the golden ages of 3LW. Before the fights, the sex scandals, the flying of KFC chicken. When life was good and so was their music. While their second record, having shotty work anyway, helped the downward spiral of 3LW. But it doesn’t make this album any less better. The album offers a good list of tracks that, for the most part flows well. 3LW sounds good together. Adrienne has a strong, soprano voice. Kiely, has an okay voice (she does lag the sound of the group), and Naturi has a rich, strong, pure voice. They have got their work cut out for them. “No More” was a good hit for them, not a strong one in comparison to lets say, TLC’s “No Scrubs” or Destiny’s Child “Jumpin’ Jumpin’”, but decent enough. “Playas Gon Play”, their second single, was a poppy, hip-hop induced summer song that does it for them. The rest of the CD has big ups and some big downs. Still a mystery, is why “Is You Feelin’ Me?” the hot pure R&B standout track, their best song to date, was never a single. Releasing it to a Pepsi commercial isn’t enough there. “Gettin Too Heavy” is a radio friendly ballad, which strikes a lite note. “Not This Time” is a sassy, in your face dance track which, along with “’Til I Say So” adds needed attitude to the CD. This album is definitely more pop than 3LW wants to lead on. And “I’m Gonna Make You Miss Me” hits a melodramatic note so nauseating it makes you want to vomit. Most the ballads on the CD don’t go very far. Maybe a lack of maturity brought down the tracks. But overall, 3LW’s 1st album is something to be proud of. While it isn’t revolutionary, it gets the work done. A good group counseling session and a handful of good writers and 3LW can be right back on track. But until then he will be reading more about them in National Enquirer than Rolling Stone or Blender. - Originally reviewed (3-16-03) Rereviewed (-) |
