This is what it is all about. Aaliyah’s 2nd offering is on the smooth, urban hip-hop side that flows through the entire CD. Aaliyah infuses her silky, sensual vocals into old school beats and kicks it up a notch when the beat is more charging. And her vocals and beats fit together like they are life long partners. Most the CD spends its time moving to the grooves into the CD. Each song is polished to shine, but not to the point of just being glossed over. The album offers more of the beats and grooves we love, while still allowing Aaliyah to explore new stuff with her and her music. This album is no doubt best known for the major hit “One In A Million”, which planted Aaliyah as the powerhouse in R&B. Its smooth vibe and irresistable charm works like clockwork. But the arguable best track title goes to the earthy “4 Page Letter”. The track shows love struck and maybe foolish Aaliyah professing her love to a man. “Hot Like Fire” starts out with heavy breathing and pounding beats, then moves on to soft touched vocals from Aaliyah that gives off an oasis in the desert feel. “Never Comin’ Back” is an exotic hip-hop mover. Even the outro puts out, “Came To Love You” is a short but efficient with its hot beat. Some of the tracks don’t play up to what they could be. “The One I Gave My Heart To” seems like to lose itself in the shuffle, making Aaliyah appear to be lost while she is singing. “Choosey Lover” sounds like it was pulled off a bad 80’s movie soundtrack. And it goes on for over 7 minutes, which is unnecessary. But other than that, Aaliyah’s spectacular talent is used to the fullest. You may be reading this review for the CD years after the release of the CD but it has only gains in value. Every listen is more enjoyable. You can just lie down and groove to the CD (and most importantly don’t have to get up to change the song). Missy and Timbaland get kudos for a job well done on producing but of course the real star is the sultry diva herself, Aaliyah. - Originally reviewed (3-22-03) Rereviewed (-) |
