I had really high hopes for Ashanti, saw what great work she did with Ja Rule and Fat Joe. I remember saying to myself "Man, she'll be big". Too bad for no good reason what so ever. This self-proclaimed "Princess of Hip-Hop and R&B" uses every cliche in the book to try to pull together this album. But most songs fall flat on their face. There are a few good ones like "Foolish" and "Voodoo". But past that your looking at another artist just about faded into the music world. Here's my review: 1. Intro - Just trying to show how many songs Ashanti has been in. (Eyes roll) 2. Foolish - A very well-done song. This song will pull you right in. Made me get the CD in the first place. 9.5/10 3. Happy - Do we really need to hear that Ashanti is on Murder Inc. record label AGAIN? Please. Same background noise echoes over and over again through this song. 5.5/10 4. Leaving - Hot beat, but very weak vocally. And if you are wondering, this song is nothing like "Always On Time". 7/10 5. Narrative Call - Just a skit. Blah, blah. 6. Call - Very annoying, background will get to you 10 seconds into the song and bad vocal get you annoyed even more. 2/10 7. Scared - First mellow song, but yet again, a voice tune-up is necessary to make it good. It's about now that I want this CD to end. 3.5/10 8. Rescue - If they made this song more up tempo and louder beats, this song would be really, really good. 7/10 9. Baby - Recycled beats from earlier on the CD, did she think she could fool us? 3/10 10. Voodoo - You'll be grooving to this song. Kinda odd beats are pulled off beautifully. 2nd best song on the CD. 8.5/10 11. Movies - 20 seconds is all I can take. I actual get a headache by the what I call "little magic fairy" background sounds. 1/10 12. Fight - Skits never add to the CD. 13. Over - Pretty vocals with another bland set of beats. 2/10 14. Unfoolish - Sounds identical to "Foolish" with Biggie's voice shamefully placed over. Doesn't serve him right. Complete junk. 0/10 15. Shi Shi - 3rd skit 16. Dreams - Cute, uplifting but I like Joe's "Ghetto Child" off of "Better Days" that has the same vibe. 7.5/10 17. Thank You - The end has come, not without a price. Kinda annoying. 1.5/10 This wraps up the review of a rather weak album from Ashanti. You know that she is cashing in her chips by the way she has advertisements in her album for other people on her record label, order form for all her merchandise you can waste more money on, and how she picked just the right color on the edge of the CD case to make it stand out from all the rest. Good thing I only paid $9 for it or I would her really been mad. Gave it away to a friend, she doesn't even like it either. BOTTOM LINE: Don't waste your money. Pick up AALIYAH or TOYA instead. People who truly live up to their name. |
