Adventures With Hair Dye

Situation: Two friends are getting ready to go out on a double date. Karie has wanted to get her hair dyed for a long time and her friend Cathy has finally dyed it for her. Unfortunately for these two girls the unexpected has happened with Karie's hair, and the truth finally comes out on other matters. Both girls are seventeen years old and Karie is in Cathy's bathroom.

Author's note: Karie should only come out of the bathroom during her last two lines. Other than that, she is never seen.

(Cathy is sitting on a chair outside of her bathroom reading a magazine, waiting for Karie)

Cathy: Your hair should be ready soon Karie. I think you picked out the best colour and I am sure it will flatter your skin. Clear midnight, what a name for a colour.

Karie: Maybe I should have gotten my hair dyed professionally…..

Cathy: Nonsense! Pay all that money for something that you can do at home?

Karie: I didn't want to bother you. I hope you don't mind doing this.

Cathy: Mind? Karie it was fun. (bell rings) Okay Karie, time is up. Time to see what clear midnight really looks like. (pause) Karie? Why aren't you saying anything? (pause) Well how does it look Karie? Are you speechless? (pause, goes to the door) Say something!

Karie: (panic) Oh my…..

Cathy: (claps hands together) I knew it, I knew it! You love it, it is wonderful! Not bad Cathy for your first time dying somebody's hair.

Karie: I don't believe it. How could you……

Cathy: Make you look wonderful? You don't have to thank me, your welcome.

Karie: Thank you? Thank you for what? (yells) Okay, thank you for turning my hair purple.

Cathy: (pause) Come again?

Karie: You heard me! My hair is purple, and not a dark purple/black shade. It is purple!

Cathy: (grabs hair colouring box) I wonder how that happened.

Karie: I thought you said that you knew what you were doing.

Cathy: You know by now never to take me seriously.

Karie: Well Miss Smartie, what am I going to do now?

Cathy: Don't worry, we will fix it. (tries to open the door and it is locked) Open the door Karie.

Karie: No.

Cathy: Why?

Karie: I do not want anybody to see me like this. Not even you.

Cathy: It cannot be that bad. Unlock the door Karie. Stop acting like a child.

Karie: No! I am staying in here until my hair can be fixed, and for your information it does look bad. Now go away!

Cathy: Go away? Go away? (hits the door) You are in my own bathroom. My bathroom, my house……

Karie: Your mistake. I can't believe I let you do this to me.

Cathy: (pause) It can't be that bad.

Karie: It is.

Cathy: Why don't you come out of the bathroom and we can fix it together. If all else fails, I could help you pick out some hats (laughs).

Karie: That's not funny.

Cathy: Where is you sense of humor? (goes back to the magazine) I swear you lost it when you started going out with Jason.

Karie: What do you mean by that? Jason is not going to like this at all.

Cathy: Listen to yourself. Jason is not going to like this at all, right. You have changed Karie.

Karie: I have not and you can't prove it.

Cathy: Oh yeah? Look at yourself and your behaviour lately. (mocking her) Jason doesn't like me in the colour peach so every article of clothing that is peach has to go. Jason thinks that television is a gift from Satin therefore I can't watch it. Jason won't stand for anything less than perfection (puts down magazine and walks back to the door).

Karie: Are you done?

Cathy: No I'm not. I am surprised that Jason even let you come over here tonight, let alone let Craig and I go out with you tonight.

Karie: What are you getting at?

Cathy: Never mind, I shouldn't have said anything. Will you come out of the bathroom now?

Karie: What do you think about him?

Cathy: Karie look, my mom is going to be home soon. She will wonder why you have locked yourself in the bathroom.

Karie: Tell me what you think about Jason. I can take what you have to say. Ever since I met him, I feel like I have been lifted up.

Cathy: (aside) More like shoved down.

Karie: What was that?

Cathy: Karie, he is like a giant weight. He has been dragging you down.

Karie: No he hasn't.

Cathy: Yes he has. You can't see it because you are so infatuated with him, but I can see it, our other friends can see it, even your mother can see it.

Karie: You talked to my mother?

Cathy: Well she……

Karie: Why hasn't this come up before.

Cathy: All of us have tried to talk to you about it, but either Jason is right at your side or you turn your brain off.

Karie: Honestly, tell me now.

Cathy: I don't want to talk to a door.

Karie: I want to know now.

Cathy: Karie, we have been friends since kindergarten, and I don't know how to say this so I am going to come out and just say it. Jason is controlling you Karie. He is dominating not only your social life, but your academics and your opinions. Since when were you interested in history? You have always hated history, ever since grade ten but Jason comes along and (throws hands up in the air) all of a sudden you fall head over heels for history. (pause) Well, it is true. It is like all of his beliefs have rubbed off on you. All of your opinions have switched. You used to laugh and have fun and have a life. You even used to eat lunch with us but now you spend all of your lunch hours studying the laws of physics or discussing nuclear science.

Karie: You are just jealous!

Cathy: Jealous? Of what? Jealous of your relationship with Jason? A guy who has transformed the Karie we used to know into a science loving drooling geek? Any guy that makes a girl drop her old life, all of her friends and activities is not worth it.

Karie: Jason opened my eyes to see how mediocre my other friends and activities were. I am much better than all of those things combined, including this blue hair.

Cathy: See what I mean? Have you been listening to me at all? When did you turn into a doormat. The old Karie would laugh at all of this. The old Karie would walk out of the bathroom, make a sarcastic remark, laugh some more and then we would both go into the bathroom and figure out how to fix this mess. The old Karie would not be sitting around whining and crying. The old Karie would be doing something about the situation.

Karie: Maybe Jason will have an idea. He is smart you know…..

Cathy: Who cares about Jason. Let me ask you Karie, who died and made him God? Why don't you forget about him and worry about yourself. (frustrated) I am sick of talking to this door Karie. Your hair can't be that bad. Stop acting like a two year old and open this door now.

Karie: Promise not to laugh.

Cathy: Promise.

Karie: You are going to laugh.

Cathy: No, I am not.

Karie: Jason is really that controlling?

Cathy: He walks you to class and then is right there to pick you up afterwards to make sure that you go only with him.

Karie: Maybe we shouldn't go out tonight.

Cathy: I don't want to. Besides, at this rate maybe you will spend the rest of the night in the bathroom.

Karie: Why didn't you tell me this before……you know, about Jason?

Cathy: Remember, I told you that I tried. Now are you going to open the door or not.

Karie: I guess I have some thinking to do.

Cathy: Well start concentrating on unlocking that door.

Karie: Okay (unlocks the door, Karie walks out).

Cathy: Oh my! I guess I should stick to my day job. At least you are prepared for purple and white day.

Karie: You promised.

Cathy: Sorry, couldn't resist.
