Dying On The Edge

Do you know what it's like to feel dead inside? I know, and that's what helped me finding the meaning of life.

It all started one night when I was walking down the street, trying to find a nice quiet place where I could just finish it all. You see, I was at a very low point in my life. The most wonderful girl in the world dumped me, my boss fired me and all I could think of was that pistol in my pocket.

So I walk into an alley, I put the gun against my head, and that's when it hit me: If I'm not afraid of death anymore then I'm already free. I can do anything I want because I don't care about the consequences anymore.

So I hide the gun under my jacket and I start walking towards the convenience store across the street. I walk in just as the last customer walks out, I put my gun in the clerk's face and start shouting at him.

I felt my face turning red, I felt the adrenaline rush... I felt alive and it felt great! As I was running out of the store I bumped into a police officer who was coming in. I panicked and I shot him. I then jumped on the top of his police cruiser when suddenly about twenty more police cars showed up. The cops started shooting at me so I fired back.

About ten bullets entered my body, all at the same time. I remember it so clearly, standing there, feeling free, overjoyed, confident, for the very first time in my life. Then a terrible thing happened, the most terrible thing that can happen to a human being... I woke up!

(pause)

Oh, man, look at the time! My lunch hour is almost over. I gotta get back to the office or my boss is gonna kill me. I'll see you around.
