Subject: Since when did voting become anti-democratic?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am sick and tired of CUPE 3903 accusing the administration of refusing
to negotiate. It seems to me that the university is at least trying to
settle this dispute by giving the union a new offer. The CUPE
executives have voted 8-1 against sending this offer to the membership
for ratification. Whether or not this offer if fair should be decided
by all 2100 or so members of the union. Hell, if the new offer is
really that bad why not let the other members vote? If they vote
against the new offer, this will support CUPE's complaints that the
administration is not negotiating fairly and should give them more
bargaining power.
Now the university is forcing them to vote and CUPE
claims that this is
somehow "anti-democratic". Yes, the administration is forcing them to
choose whether or not to accept the offer, but at least they are given a
choice. The executives of CUPE are trying to force their members into
refusing the offer; how democratic is that?
