Hello!
I have just read a number of messages posted on this message board.
I am a fourth year undergrad student who chose York University after high
school because it is one of the rare schools that offers translation. Over
the past years, I have regretted this decision on may occasions, as I am
now. After investing four years of my life and close to 20 000 dollars,
I
am not only angry, but disgusted with "our" university.
The reason I am writing this note is different. Perhaps someone will be
able to give me some insight into why students believe that there should
be
a lawsuit pursued against CUPE. When we pay tuition, it is YORK University
that we pay it to. Therefore, York University has the greater
responsibility to look after students' interests and act in the best
interests of its students. Unions exist to protect employees that belong
to
them. I realize that the union could (and perhaps should) have acted
differently and put out the flames before they turned into a fire. However,
it is York who takes our money, raises our tuitions and in return treats
us
as though we should be grateful for that.
Now, I have not yet decided how to proceed in light of this seemingly
never-ending tug-of-war. I will likely stay and finish my degree at York,
but I will never be proud of having attended this institution, and this
saddens me.
