Introduction to the Association

Since the Theta Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega at the University of Virginia re-chartered in the Spring of 1963, alumni activities have centered around the undergraduate Chapter, focusing primarily on pledge projects and camping trips (also known as Theta's Official Service to Scouting). More recently, the Superbrother index of Keith Roots (Theta 477, Spring '83) has helped Superbrothers stay in touch.

The need for a formal Alumni Association became paramount in 2001, when a former advisor pledged $10,000 to the undergraduate Chapter and challenged fellow Alumni to permanently endow Theta Chapter through matching gifts. Several Superbrothers saw the need for a formal structure to administer the Endowment, and at a meeting held in Newcomb Hall on October 21, 2001, the Alumni Association was born. Click here for more details about the history of the association.

Since its formation, the Alumni Association has secured its status as a Virginia non-profit Corporation and a registered 501(c)(3). The Association has elected officers for two-year terms. A separate Board of Trustees elected for three-year, staggered terms will administer the Trust.

The Alumni Association has two immediate goals:

  • To Endow the Chapter with $40,000 from Superbrothers to match the $10,000 anonymous donation. The deadline for meeting this goal is Theta Chapter's 75th Anniversary on February 9, 2004. To reach the Endowment FAQ and learn how to contribute, click here.

  • to organize and conduct at least two Alumni service projects each year. In February of 2002 the Association hosted its first service project at the Capital Area Food Bank in Northeast Washington, D.C. Future projects are being considered for the Triangle (NC) and the New York City area. If you are interested in participating or organizing a project, please contact an officer.
