FAVOUR FALLS TO NEW LOW
by Mack the Hack

As starnet terminals continue to be purged by pirates the science favour shortage is steadily approaching critical point. Over the past 30 turns average starnet accesses have dropped from 5 to 3 and science favour has dropped from an average of 87 on turn 690 to a shocking low of 54 on turn 720. As the situation worsens we are beginning to gradually see more and more broken science artifacts on vessels as captains struggle to maintain a reasonable favour income.

This is not to say that Spectral Duck (the Wise Prophet) and his Chosen have been idle. In fact they have actively been trying to combat this menace for many turns but it appears that their strategy in thwarting this rampant purging is failing to stem the flow. This is reflected by the drop in science praising which has fallen to an average of below 1 per turn over the past ten turns.

So what can be done to improve the situation? Increased science adventuring could certainly inject additional favour into the system but a long-term plan is needed to resolve this current crisis. As favour income continues to fall captains begin to tighten their belts and ration the favour stocks they have whilst looking toward the Wise Prophet and his Followers for answers. Perhaps Spectral Duck should take advantage of this shortage and enlist the support needed to rid the universe of these purgers before it's too late.

ALL YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT SIR
by Nigel Villiers-Smythe

Since the last issue, I have been contacted by Tiny, a member of SIR, and he was able to provide me with the following history of SIR:

SIR (Surveillance, Information, and Reconnaissance) was born sometime between Turns 375 and 379, though our records are a bit sketchy from that point in time (and this form an information alliance). The origins come from the early TBG alliance IRS, but the letters were rearranged to put a bad incident behind us involving a rogue member. Early in SIR history, SIR members were very vocal about all sorts of things. As a result, we got in a few scuffles, if you will. In fact, I would go so far as to say people didn't like us. But then, it's probably because we weren't very likeable. Anyway, we've tried to move past that.

Our last major debacle was when a splinter group was formed by three of our members. Known as FIST, they broke off and their alliance was against SIR principles. Once it was learned that they took our web page scripts and 20 turns of data, they were declared enemies. Though that status has since been revoked, there was 15000 energy for the destruction of both ships. Since then, FIST and SIR have come to an understanding, and SIR has moved to the fringes of universe news.

These days SIR is committed to the betterment (if betterment is a word) of ships within the alliance. Using our vastly improved information gathering skills, member ships can find out all of the information they need to run their ship exactly how they like. SIR has no political or religious affiliations as a whole, but many of our members choose to take different paths, as they are free to do. Several SIR members have spent time chasing universal enemies, and SIR members offer Dybuk protection when they have the favour, as seen by our chainings in the last hundred turns. Mostly we just go about our surveillance (yes, YOU are under surveillance), information gathering, and reconnaissance.

SIR definitely has the best website and URL so if you are interested in seeing our code or FAQ or you want to join, surf in to http://sir.kbs.twi.tudelft.nl/sir/

TO HAIL OR NOT TO HAIL
by Mack the Hack

It has been TBG protocol since practically the dawn of the universe for the smaller ship in a pairing to hail the larger but there have been recent reports of a reduction in the number of ships hailing each other when paired. Since communication is vital to the success of any captain in this universe it seems foolish not to take advantage of the hailing frequencies available to all ships in the form of anon mail.

In SST 708 an anon mailer asked, "where is this weaker ships always hail first thing written?". Surely it’s obvious. It's not just about what you can do for a larger ship but what they can do for you. Show a little respect for others and you'll be pleasantly surprised by the results. On top of this it’s wise to open communications with a vessel that towers over you, that is assuming you value your ship. This is underlined by Borgs statement in SST 720 "Remember to hail - the consequences of failing to can be fairly unpleasant, especially if you're a repeat offender."

What is worrying is Storms mail in SST 707 "I'm sort of a newbie ship and I ALWAYS hail ships more advanced than myself, but rarely get a reply." If some older captains are refusing to answer hails then how can newbies be encouraged to open communications with others?"

Newbie or veteran, large or small, communication is the key, so use it or lose it!

THE FINANCES SECTION
by Nigel Villers-Smythe

New to the TBG Tribune, this section will provide you with all you need to know about the average favour levels, the average cash levels, the average age of ships etcetera and how they have changed in the 5 turns since the previous issue. With this information, you can better monitor the effects that the prophets and the president are having, and whether it might be time to have a change at the top. Right - onto the information:

As can be seen from the table above, the recent speight of Dybuk releasings are showing their toll on the amount of Engineering Favour in the galaxy, and the average amount per player is dropping at a rate of almost 2 favour per person every five turns. Although there are very few average terminals, the Science Favour levels are dropping at a lower rate, with players losing on average just over 1 favour every 5 turns. Even though many players have been accused of hoarding huge cash piles, there is no significant increase in these stockpiles, yet there is not significant decrease either.  THE EDITORIAL

Welcome to the 6th issue of the TBG Tribune. As ever, we continue to have feedback from you about our publication, and we do try to act on it. The latest is about the Letters To The Editor Section. We were informed that by answering the letters publicly, it could be seen that we were taking a stand. Therfore, from now on, we will not answer the letters publicly. We do like getting the feedback, and please don't be afraid to criticise us. We would rather produce something that you enjoy reading rather than something that you will not read.

New this issue is the Finance Section and the Shop information from the Smugglers Network. We hope that these will prove useful to you all.

Menudo, the Boy Scouts of TBG?- Rambling Randal

I've been hearing murmurings about the Menudo alliance, and all anyone seems to know about it is that it is a newbie alliance and that you don't go to them, they come to you. My first thought was that an alliance composed of newbies has to be the most pathetic grouping of ships in TBG, and so I decided to find out if that was true.

While I cannot reveal to you exactly how I got the following info, let me do say that it wasn't hard.

Menudo Facts:

Menudo is an alliance composed of ships less than 100 turns old, but the alliance and its database were created by 3 unidentified "oldies", collectively called Big Brother, in an attempt to help newbies out and give them a clue. They only offer membership to newbies less than 100 turns old that have survived for a number of turns. After 100 turns, you have to move on, unless you perform tasks for the alliance, such as recruiting, that can extend your 100 turn allowance.

During my evaluation, I had a free hand to navigate all Menudo resources, and I have to say that I was very impressed. Their database is first-class and actually tailors the information a ship gets to that ship, cutting down on information overload. Also, their yahoogroup dispensed very good advice and wisdom for new ships, including some titbits that I didn't even know (ever hear of the TBG Cabal?), and Big Brother is really nice with a grade "A" personality. Try as I may, I couldn't identify him, so I suspect that he isn't very vocal in the general TBG community. Yes, I do mean him in the singular sense. While I can't identify the Big Brothers, I did determine that only one posts as Big Brother regularly. I suppose the other two are the quiet technical bunch. Another nice thing is that sometimes Big Brother sends out personal advice to each ship before the turn runs.

So, to sum up, Menudo has the potential to be a great alliance where new ships can get a wonderful start in TBG, despite the stupid name. The only obstacle that I see is that eventually Big Brother will lose interest. In fact, currently, there has been almost no email traffic on the Menudo mailing list for weeks, corresponding with the departure of some of their more outgoing members. Maybe Menudo has run its course, or maybe they will read this article, see how boring they have become, and spruce it up a bit. My free tip: Big Brother has said a lot on the yahoogroup, but most newbies don't read archives. If you want to succeed, expect to say the same thing over and over, and expect to say it without being asked to say it.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Any letter received by the Tribune will be assumed to be for publication, unless specifically stated in the mail (preferably at the top of the mail please). We will also print the letters in full, and signed by the appropriate ship. We do ask that you sign mails with your ships name please.

Thanks.
The TBG Tribune Editor.

Dear Editor,

For future reference, many reporters actually write their own stories after gathering information. This research can be done any number of ways, including looking at previous publications (in the SST, for instance), calling upon their vast memories or archives, and by asking specific questions to individuals they feel might be knowledgeable on the subject they are reporting. Few reporters ever receive a story by putting out a request for input. Also, when a report is being done, often anything that might fall under the catagory of the report is put together at once. If a certain paper was doing a report on alliances, for instance, they would either do all at once or one at time. SIR will provide an article in the turns to come.

The views stated above in no way represent the opinions of SIR as a
whole, but only those of one member ;-)

Tiny

P.S. MSHB did in fact admit to taking 20 turns of information from SIR.

To the Editor and all your readers,

I feel strongly that you are looking at the issue of tax rebates from the wrong angle.
Consider your requests in light of this:

A single cowardly shot was fired in the night and the workings of two worlds and two minor star systems collapsed!

Is it really appropriate to cry over a few dollars when a great man lies dead? When the economy of Betelguese is in tatters, with crime and starvation spiralling out of control?

The Imperial Tax Offices were in the capital of Betelguese and if any ship truly wishes to get their funds back I suggest they inquire there. They'll have to land and walk in, of course, as power in the city was extremely patchy when last I tried to contact friends there.

I wish them luck and will pray that such clearly rich and well fed Officers survive the run from their shuttle door to the building entrance. Finally, I will name a few of the ships which I have been able to aid thanks to the Emperor's support:

Firey Drake
Soylent Green
Glorious Muppet

And, of course, his vast databanks allowed me to help many more at a distance.

Yours sincerely,
Captain Greyhair
The Deformed Rabbit
