ATLAS OF THE MULTIVERSE
The DC Multiverse was first seen in THE FLASH #123 when the second Flash (Barry Allen) accidentally travelled to a parallel universe separated from his by a different fundamental vibrational frequency. This new world called Earth-Two was home to the Golden Age heroes of the 40s and 50s. As time went by new Earths were added such as Earth-Three (where all the superheroes were villains), some Earths were hypothesised to explain different stories, some were just mentioned once for dramatic effect and the list kept growing. This system existed until 1985 when DC's house clearing reduced the entire scheme down to one Earth. This list is an Atlas of those worlds that had now gone. The naming scheme devised for the different worlds of the DC Multiverse falls into three categories, numeric (e.g. Earth-One), alphabetic (e.g. Earth-A) and named (e.g. Earth-Prime).
It has been stated a number of times by DC staff and writers that the new concept of Hypertime does not mean that the Multiverse will return, but rather a new "Hyperverse" will exist. Because of this I've decided to limit (with one or two exceptions) this Atlas to worlds and events that appeared before or were set before the last page of CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS #12. In time I hope to develop a companion article called the "Atlas of the Hyperverse," but that is a while off yet.
Note: If anybody knows of anyother Earths or has anyother information to add to the Atlas please feel free to e-mail me.
Sections
- Multiple Earths - The origin and growth of the DC Multiverse and its eventual end in the Crisis on Infinite Earths.
- Pre-Crisis Alternate and Unnamed Earths - A list of unnamed alternated Earths supplied by Michael Norwitz. These were the settings for the pre-Crisis equivalent of Elseworld stories.
- Earth-Zero: The Post Crisis DC Universe - A brief overview of how continuity changes have shaped the post-Crisis DC Universe.
Referances/Thanks
The text for Earths 1-4, 6, S, X, Quality, B, 12, Crossover Earth, C, C minus and Earth Prime are based on the article "Comments on a Finite Number of Earths" in the OFFICIAL CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS CROSSOVER INDEX by Lou Mougin and Mark Waid. Anything in quotation marks " " is from the original article.
