SAILING IN HAWAII
The waters in Hawaii provide some of the most unique sailing opportunities in the world. The seas are relatively clam and the winds are heavy and steady in the summer time. Crossing the channels in the winter, however, can be challenging. There are times when we have 18-20 foot running seas with winds up to 50 knots. Because of the considerable distance between islands and unpredictable conditions, there are no bare boat rental companies operating in Hawaii. However, there are many skippered charters available for day sailing and interisland juants. Better be seasoned if planning to make a winter crossing though. I have raced here for over ten years, both dinghys and big boats. Done many round the islands, interisland races, around the State, and lots of triangles. You just can't seem to get enough of that sort of thing. We have the Kenwood Cup here every other year which is interesting. We find that many of the vessels that come from California which are accomstomed to the 12 knt wind conditions often break up here in the heavier winds.
Amazing how many big boats dissmast here in that race. On alternate years the TransPac comes to Hawaii, starting in Calilfornia. it is always a big affair when they come in. I have done the San Francisco to Catalina race occasionally but have never felt the need to make a racing crossing. If you are into racing, every Friday at 5:00 pm we have a beer can race from the Hawaii Yacht Club in Waikiki. If you're in town you can just walk the docks and when you see a crew rigging up, just ask to ride along. It's a guest night and you will surely be welcome.
