Henry II 1154--1189 Eldest son of Matilda. Laid foundations of jury system.

Richard I

1189--1199 "The Lion Heart". Participated in the third crusade. When returning home he was captured and ransomed. Spent only ten months of his reign in England.

John

1199--1216 Sealed the Magna Charta.

Henry III

1216--1272 Became king when nine years old.

Edward I

1272--1307 "Longshanks". Conquered Wales, his eldest son was created "Prince of Wales". Fought unsuccessfully against the Scots who were led by Sir William Wallace and Robert the Bruce.

Edward II

1307--1327 Defeated by Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn. Deserted by the Queen. Abdicated in favour of his son. Imprisoned and murdered at Berkely Castle.

Edward III

1327--1377 Hundered Years War with France began. The bubonic plague halved the population of England.
Richard II 1377--1399 Son of the "Black Prince" who was the eldest son of Edward III. Deposed by Henry of Lancaster and murdered in prison a year later. Start of "The Wars of the Roses".

Henry IV

1399--1413 Elected King by Parliament.

Henry V

1413--1422 Renewed the war with France.

Henry VI

1422--1461 Became king when nine months old. Lost most of France with the appearance of Joan of Arc. Suffered from hereditary madness. The Yorkists defeated the Lancastrians at Towtan with the help of "Warwick the Kingmaker". Henry VI deposed.

Edward IV

1461--1470 Deposed Henry VI. An invasion by Warwick, angry over the advancement of the Woodvilles, led to the restoration of Henry VI

Edward IV

1471--1483 Regained the throne with the death of Henry VI after the battle of Tewkesbury along with his son, Prince Edward.

Edward V

1483--1483 Imprisoned in the Tower by his uncle, Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who seized the throne. Twelve year old Edward and his younger brother, Richard, Duke of York, are believed to have been murdered by Richard III. Two skeletons were found during tower renovations in 1674.

Richard III

1483--1485 Killed in battle against Henry of Richmond who became Henry VII
