Grant was born in Que Que, Rhodesia on 31 July 1966.

He did his primary schooling there, excelling in squash and tennis. He held the title, Que Que Under 16 Junior Squash Champion for three consecutive years, after which he moved into the U19 category, and went to live in Salisbury. He was also selected to play in the Rhodesian U16 squad. During his last year in primary school he won the title of Que Que Junior School Tennis Champion, and continued to play competitively in High School.

He moved to South Africa in 1983, where he completed his schooling and went on to study a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Computer Science, at the University of the Witwatersrand.

He started work as a Junior Software Programmer, writing network communications programs using Pascal, and C. He has developed NetWare NLMs, and device drivers (LANs), as well as configuration programs for the NLMs. In order to test the software, he has installed routers, bridges, NetWare 3.11 up to NetWare 4.11. He has worked on the IPX/SPX, TCP/IP and PPP protocols, across Ethernet and Token Ring.

Working in a small environment (5-10 people) he became responsible for fixing network problems, as well as problems on the individuals workstations, taking the role of System Administrator.

He moved full time into network support as a Network Consultant, troubleshooting NetWare and NT servers and their environments, as well as doing Systems Analysis.

Given the opportunity to move into teaching, something he has always enjoyed, he started up his own business, Grant Charsley Computer Consultants, and went into the field of freelance training. He is currently specialized in teaching the A+ and Network+ certifications, but has also taught a few of the MCSE courses. He travels around the world running the CCSI exams, which certifies trainers to teach the Cisco range of courses. Also, he teaches a few of the Cisco courses himself.

Some of the other areas he's excelled in include: waterskiing, snow skiing, windsurfing, sailing. He's played the piano, organ, mouth organ, piano accordian, guitar, and the drums.

Being brought up during the Rhodesian war, he's done a lot of pistol and rifle shooting.

He's enjoyed horse riding, trail riding and motorcross racing. He has a mechanical mind, having rebuilt motor cars, and motor bikes, as well as repairing rust damage and dents on a VW golf, and giving it a respray (not something he plans to do again too soon).

His other hobbies include scuba diving, badmington, hockey, golf (he has a 11 handicap), and table tennis.

He enjoys the outdoor sports, such as camping and hiking, and has spent time camping in Kariba, Victoria Falls and other places in Zimbabwe, as well as a few places in South Africa. He has tried his hand at Trout fishing, and Tiger fishing on the Zambezi River, where he also enjoyed photographing the local game, including lion, elephant, hippopotamus, buffalo, crocodiles and numerous type of buck.

He enjoys photography, and has a Minolta Dynax 500si and 700si, fitted with a Sigma 28-200mm zoom lens and a Sigma 175-500mm zoom lens. He uses a Minolta 5400HS Program Flash. Most of the pictures you see here have been taken with one of these cameras.

He has plenty of experience with international travel, having spent time teaching different computer courses in America, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Currently he is working for a company called MicroNET in London, training cisco courses and examining potential cisco instructors world-wide, as well as teaching the CCNA course in Sydney, Australia.

He has developed his own Customer Services, or Help Desk course which is available to all training facilities on request at the email address below.
