Routes around Bornholm

Route 2: Olsker - Tejn - Dondal - Helligdomsklipperne - Gudhjem - Melsted

The first stop is in Olsker, where you can admire the highest of the island's round churches. Next to it stands a tower with a monumental bell. Going north you will enter the biggest fishing village on the island - Tejn - with a worthwhile old wind-mill. The surroundings of Tejn are called "The Riviera of Bornholm" because of rocky cliffs shielding sandy beaches which make this place ideal for sun-bathing.

The biking route will lead you to Stammersahalle where archaeologists found graves dating to the Bronze Age (13th - 11th century BC). Few kilometres farther there is Dondal valley, famous for rare species of plants, rich fauna and one of the biggest waterfalls in Denmark - Dondale waterfall.

The Bornholm Art Museum

The most interesting place at this stage is the Kunstmuseum - the Bornholm Art Museum. The museum is an old institution that has recently celebrated its 100-year anniversary, but it is placed in a modern building situated on the coast. It offers its visitors an excellent collection of paintings, sculptures, and other works of art related to the island. But it is not only the museum that is interesting - its neighbourhood includes a scenic formation Helligdomsklipperne with even 22-metres-high rocks and beautiful caves.

A next stop farther east is Gudhjem. You should visit there the following places: ruins of Sankt Annae Kapel built in 12th century, numerous galleries of art and applied art, for example Gudhjem Station, and the Bokul mountain from which you can admire a wonderful panorama of the city and where fig-trees grow - quite an unusual plant in this climate.

Not far away from Gudhjem there is an agricultural museum - Landbrugsmuseet Melstedgard, a beautiful example of former building styles. What is more interesting, it is a "living museum" where old farming and work methods are demonstrated and workers wear old-fashioned clothes.
